As a country bumpkin, I've never heard of 'going home' ranks.

Some of the previous posts give an indication of their purpose but, how do they actually work? What is the etiquette regarding taking a job or refusing a job?

I think they have large ranks with a number of different pick up points pointing different ways. So if a customer wants to go east then a driver who wants to go home that way pick them up from that point.

TBH can't see it working many places outside of London, especially if you need to finance marshals to make sure everyone is where they should be, but if it works there good luck to them.

GBC .how much you asking?

T’was a joke Mr TCB, my little attempt at humour.

As Mr ACabbie scribes, I'm as busy on my chosen nights as I need to be, the works slowed a little, but on a Friday and Saturday night that means the decent folks are getting taxis quicker, and they're no longer being forced to give up and take a tout out of desperation to get home.

If the Recession doesn’t bite too much more than what it is at the present, I'll have no complaints.

Jim raises a few points which I have to agree with, especially about the 'Gum Bumper' crew.

I am glad someone has bought up the problem with the going home ranks.

I think the biggest winners at these ranks are the marshalls.

They get paid (£200) but as others have said there's a lot of good jobs going out beyond the MPD which suits me just fine at 3am.

following on from "going home ranks" another point that is suggested number 4:-

Quote:
4. We must form teams of venue marshall’s and approach clubs, bars and major hotels and provide a taxi service rather than rely on door staff to put taxi work into mini cabs.

If it means paying a marshall £200 for the night to get some of OUR work off the touts then i personally think it's value for money, i don't expect them to work for the love of the trade when they could be driving around earning themselves, be thankful that they at least are prepared to do something.

Now, where do i sign up to become a marshall ?

On the one hand you're telling that the PCO shouldn't issue any more driver's licences until 2010 at the earliest, next you're telling us that recession brings up to each cabbie deaths in a night?

This is drivel.

Just look around industry, JCB for example. Because of the downturn they are making compulsory redundancies even though staff and workers have accepted a pay cut.
The last thing they will do is recruit and when they do recruit it will be when there is an upturn.
This is how business works. This is not drivel.
Why should the taxi trade be any different?
Less work = less jobs. The taxi trade is no different.

It is drivel.

Jobs are still being advertised. Work is still there to be had.

What you're doing is using a potential recession as an excuse for your own failure. And that's before the full effects are felt.

Put 100 economists in a room and the only certainty is that you will get 100 different solutions to the problem.

Economists, like all so called experts, like to massage their own egos before getting to the nub of the problem.

That's why our political and legal system depends on these so-called "experts". Because, from the so-called expert evidence, the judiciary and politicians are allowed to claim that such confusion shows them to be the only ones able to evaluate the "truth". And what is inflicted on the rest of the bewildered herd is their version of the "truth".

Democracy and Justice? R.I.P.
