BBC presenter says taxi driver with turban would 'freak my daughter out'
A BBC presenter told a taxi firm not to send a driver wearing a turban to pick up her daughter as it would "freak her out".

Sam Mason, 40, who joined BBC Radio Bristol in September, called the taxi firm off-air when she was playing a song on her afternoon show.

The firm, which records messages routinely in case of queries or complaints, recorded her speaking to the operator about her daughter and telling her "A guy with a turban on is going to freak her out."

Mason was subsequently suspended and then fired 24 hours later when the operator passed a transcript of the conversation on to The Sun newspaper, who then contacted the BBC.

The transcript shows how she ordered a taxi to take her 14-year-old from her house in Clifton to her grandparents' home.

Mason says: "I know this sounds really racist, but I'm not being . . . please, don't send anyone like, you know what I mean. An English person would be great, a female would be better."

The operator replies: "We would class that as being racist. We can't penalise the Asian drivers and just send an English one," before Mason retorts "You've managed it before".

Mason insists that if it were her, she "wouldn't care if it had two heads, but it's my little girl we are talking about."

When she is then passed to a male operator, she tells him that his female colleague has a "bad attitude."

She says: "I work at the BBC. I'm far from racist and that uneducated woman has no right to call me one.

"I don't want her to turn up with a guy with a turban on, it's going to freak her out. She's not used to Asians."

Mason then rang off but called back later to complain before a manager accepted her booking.

A BBC statement said: "Although Sam Mason's remarks were not made on-air, her comments were completely unacceptable and, for that reason, she has been informed that she will no longer be working for the BBC with immediate effect".

As a customer surely she can ask for whatever driver she wants?

Will she be a sexist if she asks for a female driver?

If an Asian punter asks for an Asian driver, will they be racist?

More PC sheeite.

Definetly.

More to the point, Were her rights under the Data Protection Act broken?

Was she aware that her call was being recorded?

Did she know the recording of her her call would be given to the Sun?

By what right did the BBC sack her?

She should take her employment case to tribunal. The BBC have been premature in sacking her. Particularly for something that is not work related. I guess they're just responding to recent criticism over the Brand/Ross affair.

Imagine, they crack a joke, albeit a bad one, and more civil liberties jump out the window.

The product of political correctness is that it removes and individual's rights to determine their own needs and wants.

This females request should have remained a private matter between her and her cab supplier. Her rights were breached by them for publicising it. She should sue them.

And, rather than pandering to children's firight over all things from dogs to turbans, should parents be helping children to confront those fears, and deal with them? Or, aren't they just letting insecure people loose on society?

I actually think I agree with Jasbar!

Seems mental....some council in London screw up, a child dies three people are suspended.

Ross / Brand and this silly c*w lose their jobs for upseting someone and Jon Gaunt is suspended to for upseting some pr*ck of a councillor.

Yes, good point. The London child case was particularly distressing. Especially after the Victoria Climbie (?) case in the same borough.

I wonder, id a social worker goes to see a child, and it is covered with chocolate, should said social worker be questioning how this child is cared for? Wouldn't any normal parent ensure the child is presented in the best way possible to impress said social worker and reassure her that the child was being properly looked after?

Shouldn't warning bells be ringing? Aren't these social workers supposed to be degree educated and working according to strict guidelines?

Is there anything to stop this happening again?

Also 'disgusted' is taxi driver Fred Wallace - who recently suffered a head injury after falling of a ladder while putting up a very early Christmas Tree. "I have a bandage on my head - it looks like a turban - it kind of upset me too"
