This is proving to be a hard lesson to learn and is costing me a lot of money
The story so far
Mistake no1 couldn't find the time to phone round for quotes so renewed over the phone with my existing broker for both vehicles (both policies renewal dates within a couple of weeks) paid in full
Got 2 letters back asking for photocopies of licenses badges etc took about a week to get all the stuff together and duly posted that off
a week later got a letter from them saying that they would cancel the policy if i didn't send the documents in immediately so phoned them up and was told over the phone yes they had received them and that everything was OK its just that all the documents were accidentally logged against one of the policies and my policy documents would sent out shortly
10 days later I received another letter telling me the policy had been cancelled. Again I phoned up and was told no it hasn't been cancelled and there wasn't a problem . Where is my certificate of insurance then I asked we'll send it today you'll get it tommorrow
3 days later still nothing so I tried phoning the underwriters direct they put the registration into their computer and found NO record of either vehicle being insured I phoned up again and again was assured verbally that I was insured. I tried to explain to them that i have to show the certificate of insurance to thye council and the covernote is now out of date. We'll issue your documents today they said
Nothing arrived in the post so another phone call produced fresh temporary cover notes which arrived in the post along with the documentation for the second vehicle which was a new policy followed by nothing else with only 2 weeks left on the covernote i decided to phone the FSA to start a complaint and was told that I had to make the complaint direct to the broker who was giving me the runaround anyway
I phoned them up and said I want to make a formal complaint they would not give me a complaint reference or the details of how to take the complaint forward to the insurance ombudsman which they are supposed to do under FSA rules but again the same spiel you are insured and we will issue policy documents today
Guess what 7 days later and nothing has arrived so I phoned the FSB legal advice line who said that on the balance of probability I was not insured and should take out a fresh policy elsewhere immediately and sue the brokers for a refund on what i paid them through the small claims court
I have now had to pay out another wedge of cash to insure the vehicle and with all the hastle of form filling and getting together photocopies etc. and have to formally cancel the first policy in order to get a certificate for my NCB. I was also told by one broker I got a quote from that they are not legally obliged to refund me anything of the premiums i have paid so it looks like like I have had to pay twice just to get a legal certificate of insurance which i can show the council to satisfy the licensing conditions !!!
Watch this space I think it is worth a punt at a claim in the small court and will definitely try writing to the insurance ombudsman but i doubt that will achieve anything !
I was also told by one broker that
I'd dump them and go for another company, I can't add much to whats been said other than keep pushing the company. I'd also phone up the insurance company direct and see whats going on with the broker, the broker might not be sending the money through to the insurance company.
