according to people I know in the oil business (not connected to fuel),
diesel will always remain a lot more expensive than petrol.
The garages and supermarkets are drastically reducing the price of petrol, and the diesel drivers are subsidising them, with the higher prices.
Some garages in London are charging up to 15p. a litre more for diesel than petrol.

consider this..

diesels do more to the gallon (generally)

the public therefore think a diesel is great

hence the demand for diesel cars = a fall in petrol consumption...

so they make petrol cheaper and keep derv high, therefore compensating for the fall in petrol sales

i wonder what the realative production costs are for derv vs u/leaded

derv is a light oil made from oil

petrol is a spirit which surely costs more to produce?

yet petrol is 50P a gallon cheaper?

Diesel is a waste product made when crude oil is refined to make petrol, basically petrol must be made so diesel can be produced hence the price difference.

I don't buy that reason. If it was correct, why until the last few years was diesel ALWAYS cheaper than petrol?

Right here is the laymans explanation of what happens to a barrel, the crude comes into the refinery it is then processed by thinning down, after the 3rd thinning you get diesel, after the 8th you get petrol and in-between both you get other oil products :D
so going by the above diesel should be cheaper than petrol at the pumps, like it still is in the rest of the world

Usually when there is a higher demand for something prices start to fall. What exactly are the benefits of having a petrol vehicle over a diesel vehicle anyway?

Does anyone see the irony in charging more for the waste than for the finished product?

Why do the refiners allow their product to be sold for less than the cost of production? In any other manufacturing business, they would cut back on supply to make sure they made a profit. :?

VAT cut?

Quote:
The cut is expected to see the rate drop from its current level of 17.5 per cent for at least a year - and possibly for as long as two years.

There was also speculation that Darling could help motorists by postponing plans to increase vehicle excise duty on the most polluting cars
