if "staff" are PAYE then they have a pay rate, with standard or agreed overtime rates, bank holidays and xmas arent a suprise, i think they come round every year, and staff are entitled to double or treble time, just as hack meters are and just as a PH will charge if they have any sense.

a hack meter should be 50% (or whatever) extra every day 00.00-06.00 but do base ops get extra then?

you obviously have never employed staff ! when it comes to public holidays/celebrations like xmas and new year their demands are always high !

actually yes i have employed staff, both as a sole trader and a ltd company

and covered bank holidays

thier "demands" and expectations are ruled by legislation and employment contracts if they are PAYE.

it seems the days of saturdays=x1.5 time and sundays=x2.0 time are gone, but keeping them sweet isnt difficult, after all there are 2 million unemployed ot there...

NMW and some overtime weekends/nights with double or treble time bank holidays is plenty

round here radio rents are just going down and down earlier this year i put our up to £60 a week from £55 which it had been for 10 years only to find that one of my main competitors has put their down to £50 a week which is in response to a newish firm in town having put theirs down to £25 a week ! so there aint no vat to worry about cos noone generates enough turnover to come close !

See that just shows how f***ing thick many, if not most, of us in the trade are.

How do drivers think they are going to flourish when the firm that gives them work has nothing left in the pot to advertise and promote the circuit they are on? Should they be surprised when the boss keeps all the pukka work for himself?

No doubt the dumbo's would be happy to earn around £500 a week and pay £25 a week dues rather than a grand a week paying £100. ](*,)

not really a valid point is it

the biggest form of advertising isnt the press or yellow pages, its the signage on cars on the circuit, provided by the owner/drivers renting radios!!!!...

Yes, its tantamount to fraud to DEfraud the circuit cars he rents radios to then feed his own vehicles

thats fine when the grand is there, but in the lean times/bad weeks no, its a very bad deal

having BEEN a renter and having SEEN "inner circle" cars FTF with drivers on mobile phones then shooting off to airports on jobs not given out over the radio i know what its like

ive also seen a base owner cowering in terror behind a locked base office door as a driver who has snapped kicking it down to "have a word" with him...

42 drivers at my firm paying £50 each xmas money = £2100.
Controllers get double pay from 00.00am xmas day till 00.00am boxing day. Same new yrs eve.
So he has to pay an extra ££480 in wages, £1600 odd quid in his pocket!
I have never agreed with paying xmas money, it's the owners job to pay staff wages, not the drivers.

i mean th eexample you quote gives a £1600 xmas gift to the base owner, and thats only 42 cars

so 420 cars would be....................£16,000....(less a bit cos 1 ops wouldnt run 420 cars though)

still a nice pressie innit, and if no reciepts are given..... 8)

I put the iffy boss as an example of what can and does go on.

But my point is nothing really to do with said iffy boss.

My point is that many drivers seem to be more interested on what something might cost (radio rent/dues), rather that what it can gain you (earnings).

So anyone thinking they can save £25 a week on radio rent/dues who hasn't worked out what it might cost them in terms of lost work, is a dosey waller.
