A taxi driver's licence was suspended during a random road check in search of red diesel scammers.

Around 90 vehicles were stopped during the exercise held on the A660 Otley Road near to Ilkley.

Eighty-five had tanks "dipped" as officers looked for the illegal use of rebated red diesel on the road. The heavy oil version of diesel, which is dyed red to make it readily identifiable, is cheaper than regular fuel and only intended for agricultural and some commercial vehicles.

The check follows concerns that more drivers are breaking the law to save money in light of recent fuel hikes.

Four taxis were also checked with one driver suspended due to a breach of radio equipment regulations.

Ilkley neighbourhood police team officers were joined by HM customs and excise and Bradford Council's animal welfare, environmental health and hackney carriage licensing teams to carry out the operation.
