Thanks for that.I was hoping it was one of those daft things where someone would say something along the lines of "Oh, its a common fault, look for a bent giggle pin on the end of the thyroid bush, always happens on the fairways"
I like your web site by the way.

It is a common fault...... the cable wears and splinters inside the outer cable.... it then stops the cable working correctly.....

I had a poke about under the bonnet and couldn't even find a cable let alone adjust it.Will probably hang on till I can have a serious grovel underneath and see what I can find.

Every year I have the gearbox serviced (oil & filter changed, bands adjusted etc) Cost about £30.
Every 6 months I have the oil changed,cost £10.
Gearbox works like clockwork.

If you neglect your box, like anything else, problems develop.
You probably need a complete service and that includes adjusting the kickdown cable.

Thanks for the answers everyone.
The fairway doesn't actually have a kick down cable.

The kickdown finally stopped working all together.
Trawling through books and asking around I'm given conflicting advice,I can't find a kick down cable and am told either there is one or there isn't depending on who I ask.
I've changed the fluid, checked for disconnected pipes and wires and can't find anything. There's what seems to be a vacuum modulator valve on the pump but I'd have thought it only altered the up and down shift speeds. The set up certainly isn't the same as the TX! which shows a cable, maybe the kickdown is electric?.Maybe the engine has been changed for an earlier one?.
The box changes up fine and can be dropped a gear on the shift lever but simply refuses to kick down.

Do you have a switch located under the throttle pedal?

I had an old H reg auto once for a few days and the kick down didn't work but I noticed the said switch was disconnected, not being my cab I didn't like to fiddle in case it had been disconnected for a reason.

Hello Darren
I had a look but couldn't see a switch, but did find a disconnected black wire close to the top of the pedal.Joining this back together started the kick down working (either that or it was a pretty amazing co incidence) and it now works as it should do,better in fact than since I've owned it.
If it keeps going like it is now,I'm well pleased.
