Why distinguish between taxi drivers, why not just ask what is a fair wage for all? Apart from the fact that the majority of taxi drivers aren't on wages to how many hours per week does your fair wage relate? Can we assume 48? What happens to these radio circuits when drivers have milked the most lucrative 8 hours of the day and all gone home?

JD

the cream goes to favourites/inner circle, when theyve had the said cream and gone home the rest (who pay the same rent) are ordered by circuit/base owners they ARE staying on for the 3 £4 jobs booked for the next 4 hours...."or else"

Is that your solution to mandatory working hours, what about the other 8 hours of the day?

So you wan't a mandatory reduction in working hours to stop "some" drivers working excessive hours? How will the mandatory reduction apply?

JD

No like you I would like a solution that will enable drivers to earn a decent living without having to work excessive hours. Would you rather drivers kill themselves and their passengers in a vain attempt to earn enough money to survive.

On behalf of Terry Flanagan GMB PDB National Organiser

We the GMB note the interest of our contribution to the Vine show recently;

So lets address some points

Firstly JD criticises the broadcast without listening to it, WHY?

Secondly, if JD is so concerned, will he accept OUR invite to partake in the next MOM meeting ?

It needs to be pointed out that the comments were addressed to the industry nationwide.

Drivers hours in many cases are clearly unacceptably long, dangerously so in our opinion!

Should Drivers have to take an earnings cut obviously not!

So the solution ........ DEMARCATION so clearly ignored by EVERY contributor ...... agreed by the industry would enable a united front on all issues!.....leading too an unstoppable lobby on OUR issues?

In London currently 900 drivers a month applying for licences at the PCO!

Stupidly the PCO has allowed the Proprietors to Police [via the topographical test]entry into the industry, surprise surprise its TOTALLY CORRUPT [had Ken been re-elected we were confident of out sorcing this test]

Nationwide we see PH being the last resort of the newly redundant from many industries!....are you going too follow the London example and allow the unscrupulous to flood their companies with these victims of the recession??

Lets be clear the SELF EMPLOYED situation is already coverd by legislation Capt Cab outlined some details earlier! the only reason it flourishes is because the VICTIMS lack the initiative or courage to deal with it....,many Drivers are indeed WORKERS under the direction of the company and entitled too Holiday Pay notice periods Etc.

Virtually all other public transport is SUBSIDISED, so where does that leave US?

Should PH and Hack in some way receive subsidy?

Finally, with very few exceptions PH and Hack drivers are bottom of the earnings leagues, are fourth in the most Dangerous occupations, definitely top the apathy league and reap the benefits!!!
Surely the time has come to debate, organise and become active?

I should point out that at no time have I ever criticised the broadcast of Mr Flanagan and the record will show that. The record will also show that I have only ever criiticised the "idea" of mandatory working hours for the taxi trade as a whole.

I distinguish between taxi drivers because that is the current topic you want to discuss a fair wage for all do another post  A 48 hour week would be lovely for some taxi drivers I'm sure. I'm not an expert in how many hours are considered safe for driving and would be reliant on this information being provided but I've heard some drivers working in excess of 15hrs this surely can't be safe. I'd also like to know when the most lucrative 8 hours of the day are because there certainly aren't 8 hours here that are lucrative on a regular basis.

I work in a company of 350 PH drivers on an open shift. Whilst I'm sure that there is 'feeding' going on operators deny this as our system is all computerised. The quality of the work is nothing exciting and hasn't been for a while. I would move to another company but it would be pointless as the other 2 companies here also have 350 and 250 drivers respectively and the quality of their work is just as sh**. We are a delimited area and have HC's on our systems which seem to be taking all the early evening work because there is none for them on the roads. The union here seems to have lost the respect of the drivers so none will join. We are quite clearly over a barrel so to speak.

Well apart from a reduction in workings hours how do you propose to achieve your desire of drivers working the hours you want them to work, for a decent level of earnings, which you have so far declined to put a figure? I might add that you also haven't actually stated how many hours work is acceptible in your eyes?

Ok I'm happy earning between £20-£30 per hour but that's me. I only work weekends so I'm part time. It's not my only income now although I use work full time (as a taxi driver). I have noticed that over the years I earn no more now than I did when I started 8 years ago (if you worked it out hourly). Everythings gone up since I started so in effect my wages have gone down. I am aware that some drivers working midweek are lucky if they clear a minimum wage (again if worked out hourly). Consequently drivers are having to work more and more hours this surely cannot be acceptable and puts pressure on them to do excessive hours and you must agree that this is a dangerous practice. Obviously what you need to earn is retrospect to what you need to pay out and this varies but to work out a reasonable income for taxi drivers an average is going to have to be decided with a % either side as acceptable

Thanks for that but it still doesn't give us any indication as to what you think is a suitable mandatory restriction of working hours. You can use your 50-50, ask the audience or phone a friend? lol

I'll do a 50/50 or ask the audience  . I never said I had a solution I just agreed with the principal that drivers should not have to work excessive hours to earn a decent living :D

I didn't ask for a solution I merely asked for an indication as to what you personally regard as suitable mandatory working hours? It would appear no one is prepared to put their opinion on record and I find that rather strange considering some people have expressed very strong opinions on restricting drivers working hours.

Why do I get the feeling that this is ground hog day and not xmas?
