At least you realise you are a private hire driver, private hire companies have been misrepresenting themselves as Taxis for quite a number of years, it has enabled them to enter a ready built market. but Joe Bloggs the general public normally does not know the difference, so when he hails a private hire vehicle on the street which he thinks is a taxi and is illegally picked up ..... that certainly is not the fault of a hackney driver ..... if you have become an assessor for the NVQ level 2 and don't know the difference it places a rather large question mark over the credibility of this qualification and the people teaching it

Of course I know the difference it's not about knowing the difference it's about whether a single tier taxis service with varied vehicles would work and I really believe it would. You have to move with the times and the technology available and the way councils are working to provide services for the public. As I keep saying if it works ok for HC to do public and private work then why would it not work for the current stock of PH vehicles to do the same. This can be modified by only allowing certain sizes of vehicles (I don't agree with these dinky cars), colour coding and putting roof signs on saloons etc, etc. There is no good reason that I can see why this would not work except the HC would loose it's monopoly to be the only taxis that can be flagged. Give me 3 good reasons that cannot be overcome as to why this would not work?

I also have my doubts about the credibility of the NVQ as I have said before and will continue to say it simply does not go far enough but at the moment it's all we've got.

Image oh Look a coffin on wheels..... if you would care to look back over the thousands of stories relating to drivers being attacked and murdered you might notice one thing 99.9 per cent happen in vehicles that are not purpose-built hackneys.... in fact I can only remembered one incident where a driver was killed in a purpose-built hackney.... and he was shot through the window..... the professional hackney trade have been working for many many years regarding driver safety.
PS.. all the customer wants is to be taken home by somebody who knows where they're going..... all the customer wants is to know that they will not be attacked by some dodgy driver.....

toots..Give me one good reason why you do not simply change your licence to hackney..... that does not relate to the fact that you do not want to spend more money.

Well, not quite but Mr A (Thomasthetaxi) thinks so.

In keeping with my promise to be polite, and a little more understanding to his view points, he's given permission for it to be posted on here for discussion.

My own viewpoint is simple, it will never happen in London.

Anyhow, here is his article:

The word on their lips is HARMONISATION. In the corridors of power at Windsor House, they are making plans for a one tier taxi trade.

They are out to blur the lines between the two trades. In the next two years, they will merge us all in to one big fun loving band of happy cabby's.
They want to get rid of 25,000 self employed Taxi drivers and have us all working for men like Steve Wright and John Griffin. Just look at the radio circuits, they are already in a transitional mode with there fleets of partner mini cabs. We have to get the Mayor firmly on our side.
We need to take action now.

We need stronger leaders who are willing to rock the boat. We have to change the "I'm all right jack" attitude, because very shortly you wont be all right.

TFL/PCO, have shot themselves in the foot with the new Merc taxi, as this vehicle was only licensed to blend us in with the mini cab trade. (Note: Meets the COF  )

They never catered for the fact that LTI may go under in the new year, especially if the class action law suit goes through, this may become the only purpose built Taxi available to us.

We have to make sure, if we are to use this Merc, then the PHV drivers must stop using it and any other similar vehicles.

It says in the 1998 Private Hire Act, that no vehicle, that resembles a Hackney Carriage in any way, can be used as a Private Hire Vehicle, something they have overlooked. The Merc as a Taxi resembles almost all people carriers, should private hire go back to salon cars? or just paint them all bright yellow as in Birmingham.

They passed this act in Parliament, they must be made to abide by it?

If they don't enforce this, then we have to go to the high court.
It would cost about 10 grand to go to court on this issue, that's about 40p from every driver.
Our problem is, there are too many people from outside our trade with too much say in the way we operate. These people are not on our side, never have been and have to be removed. We need a divorce from TFL.
We need to get shot of our enemies who run the PCO.
We need to replace them with educated Taxi drivers, not trade reps.
They have already proved, they cant run anything to our advantage, just look at Mr Oddie;
not a word in eight months on the board of TFL, with all the clipboard men and minicab rank issues hitting the headlines.

Why do they want to Harmonise the Trades?
TFL have for the past couple of years been implementing the old mayors policy of Equality and Inclusion, E&I to those in power. Under this system we have seen a watering down of the knowledge with handouts to anyone from an ethnic back ground in the form of mopeds, safety equipment and fuel allowances. Plus we now see wheelchair bound, disabled Taxi drivers. Very helpful to other wheelchair users or people with luggage, what happened to being a fit and proper person?
Ken Livingstone and his henchman Peter Hendy always said the London Licensed taxi Trade did not reflect the diversity of this city. The same could be said of the Private hire trade that is made up almost entirely from people with an ethnic back ground and people with English as a second language. Perhaps this is why they wanted to blend the two trades together.

It only ever worried Ken and Peter who said "The London Taxi Trade is too White, too Male and to English, no one else commented or seemed to care and why should they, after all its not a monopoly, anyone can sign on and do the knowledge but only the very best get through. Surly that's what you need to find, the very best cabby's, to serve the very best city in the world. Who wants to be referred to as one of Kens substandard cabby's.

This situation can only get worse under TFL rule, this is why we need to brake away as soon as possible.

GBC....unlike your good self I have no such 'promise to be polite' it seems obvious the articles author has a massive conspiracy theory going around in his head, and perhaps he spends too much time with the insane who frequent cab shelters.

Most of it is complete drivel !

You should re-read the post.... My point was that where a firearm is concerned even a purpose built hackney was no protection... but that was a one-off.
ps.. I have a firearms certificate.... and I am fully aware of the damage a gun can inflict

I can go to licencing tomorrow and get one I've met the criteria as I said earlier. I've done the knowledge test and my CRB is clean. In fact I have an appointment tomorrow to renew my badge so if I WANTED TO I could. I don't want to because I don't want to sit in an uncomfortable vehicle. Now if I was working in Halton or the like I would be on a HC badge because they have saloon vehicles as HC and with regard to cost it's not any difference so it wouldn't matter :D

I already know what you need to do in your area.... you don't want to change because it doesn't suit you, and you're not alone..... that is why you're one tear system will not work.the disabled lobby are very influential....

Of course that is all the customer wants but to imply that the only way they can be assured of such is to use HC is laughable. You are suggesting that PH drivers are not safe.......

The driving of a HC does not suit me neither does it suit me to travel in one as a customer unless I have to, only because they are not comfortable, nothing to do with anything else. With regard to the disabled lobbiest perhaps they should open their eyes and realise that not all disabled should have to travel in HC because they are the only vehicles available to flag down. My mother is disabled she can't get into a HC without a struggle so she has to wait however long it takes for a PH to come and get her, as far as I am concerned that is wrong she should be able to do as everybody else and flag a taxi down that she can get into. It would appear to me that the arguement is not whether a single tier system would work as I already know it does because HC work both systems it's a question of what vehicles should be used and the requirements that have to be met before a licence is granted. I would have thought that most people would be glad to see the back of PH only taxis in favour of a varied range of Taxis. One system different vehicles to suit the areas in which they are working. I feel that the arguement is more should all taxis be the traditional black hackney carriage like in London or should there be a variation inc saloon vehicles. We know that saloon vehicles are ok as public hire vehicles in some councils and we know that HC are perfectly ok on the private hire system so I can't think of a reason why a single tier system wouldn't work and for the devil of it we call it we'll call it a Taxi Service

Well captain cab, let us hope that it is "complete drivel" for the sake of the london "licensed" cab trade.
