Also the windows don't open...Is that required by the COF?

Clearly not, since it passed.

BTW I notice it doesn't have a fire suppression system either.

I suspect that's because it doesn't routinely self combust.

Is there anyone who thinks Mercedes got to where they are today by treating punters in the same way as LTI treat TX owners? :?

How many purpose built taxi's did Mercedes build last year?

Considering they make them for a world wide market without the rear steer, about 75k

The actual number you are grasping for is 75k less than that skippy.

I expect they sold several 100,000 cars last year, worldwide, that are being used as taxis.

The fact that only here, in good old blighty, we have such a thing as a purpose built cab, is a reflection on our stupidity.

They now have a massive fleet of them at all German airports, and they are staring to be used in the towns and citys as well

Do Skoda also build purpose built taxi's?

If that wont go in a TX it damn sure wont go in an E7 or other Eurocab.

The TX beleive it or not has the widest door opening (yes I'm sad I've measured them all)

TX is 32 inches whereby all the Euro's float around the 29 inch mark.

What's the good of all that internal space if the door opening is 3 inches less than the TX?

A very pertinent question.

Over to you then, Skippy.

Do you mean it's ok to treat your customers like sh*t if you can cobble together a "purpose built taxi" from the cheapest components you can find, portray it as a "British icon" (even if you plan to build them in a Chinese goulag) and sucker many councils into granting you a monopoly?

The opposite is also true. What's the point of having a door wide enough to accomodate a wheelchair of huge size, when there's barely enough room to turn an average size one?

No Gusmac, I meant how many purpose built, wheelchair accessible taxi's did Mercedes produce last year.

I hope that answers your question.

As long as you provide a vehicle that is accessible to a standard manual wheelchair, (which I do) you are meeting the requirements of the DSA. It would be unreasonable to require a taxi to be able to load the worlds widest wheelchair.

I do not like the converted van type taxi of any variation, because:-

They are a converted van and the public know it to be so.

The doors are too narrow.

The step is too high. The owner of a recently purchased TW200 carries a caravan step with him, the electric side step has failed. (again)

The vehicle is too big, as the video states.

It's a van. There's no getting away from it, V.A.N.

It is not as accessible as a TX4.

The angle of the extended ramp into a van is much steeper than a TX, or Metrocab.

Anyone who thinks otherwise should check out the video clip again, (and maybe again)

And anyone who does regular wheelchair work will soon be disabled themselves with a bad back, loading into a VAN.

But don't let me put you off. Make your own mind up. (where minds are available)

Whats wrong with VAN the man Morrison

The Vito, is made in Spain under licence, once Mercedes find out there are small teething problems they will soon sort them.
Whats the betting that the Vito will soon have air suspension to reduce the step height and make loading of chairs easier, similar to the busses that lower
sliding windows will soon be incorporated like on the E7 and the internal passenger switches and intercom will be sorted

He of little faith
What would you drive if LTI go bust and you could no longer get one???????????????????????

100/1 the betting.

The windows and intercom are down to the converters.

Me of little faith in the Vito conversion. Good van, bad Taxi.

Would I drive a TX if LTI went bust? Should I remind you that I have been driving Metrocabs since 1992?

The rear wheel steering will be an expensive repair when it fails, as it surely will, it's PCO test, at it's first annual.

I am old enough to remember when anything made in Japan was known as "Jap crap" and when "made in Hong Kong" was to be avoided.

You should take a look at the small print on anything bought in the last ten years, from i-pod to W-ee, made in China, me old china.

The Indian made units will probably be better built than the originals.

Isn't "Chop Shop" a restaurant?
