Fewer cabs Equal longer hours to Carry out a given amount of work.....

Not sure I agree with that.

Providing the punter numbers remain static, then surely everyone will be picking up the same number of punters but in less time.

The demand does. Demand for cabs is not affected by supply.
If ten people want cabs at 8am, then there are ten jobs available. Doesn't matter if there are ten cabs or fifty available, there are still ten jobs available. ten cabs working will get a job, the others get nothing.

You have missed the point here. The number of customers may have been 10 at 8.00am six months ago but 4 of the customers have now lost their jobs because of the economic downturn and 3 now catch the bus.

I think that the main problem is PH are not controlled the same way as taxis are.
If the government wanted to they could set the hours for taxis quit easily by insisting they have some sort of tachograph fitted and possibly a speed governor like most of the other transport busses and LGVs
This could also apply to the PH but they would need to have meters fitted that has a printer connected to it so they have to print off a slip that shows how long they have worked, this slip must be kept for at least 2 years
Perhaps some of the electrical wizards on here could explain if it could be done

Just make it compulsary to have a tracker fitted in the vehicle and a tacho. That way it would be very easy to see where the car has been for the duration of the drivers shift.

The answer is to go back to the L.As who have caused this situation by allowing a saturation of taxis and p.h - if you could earn a decent living working 40 hours then many would be doing so.

It sadly Isnt...If im not Driving im Book keeping or Car Cleaning or Simply on call...if im on call its the same as working as that time cannot be used for much else, its Work time...it certainly Isnt rest time...Spread over seven Days its 14 hours a day...in reality Im on call between 7.00am through to around 10.00 pm and longer at weekends..thats more Like 15 hours a day.

Its all a matter of how you Interpret your working hours..

Im guessing a lot of you self employed guys are working more than your car Driving time says you are...
Bloodnock spot on.

A truck driver could actualy be on duty for a maximum of 84 hours a week over 6 days and still be under the 48 hrs max working time under WTD doing 3 15 hr days and 3 13 hr days all leagl and above board.
So i would say the 14 hours the driver did was not excessive in my opinion.

Plus why is it always the drivers fault when a pedestrain gets hit on the road, most european countries and the US would prosecute them for Jay Walking.

Those 4 made reduntant and 3 catching the bus would have happened regardless of how many cabs were on the road. That is economic factors affecting demand, not the number of available cabs.

Aye..I could make as much money if not more by working half the hours for someone else, but it Certainly would not be as a Driver. Besides, where else could I find a Job so satisfying,Stimulating,Educational, rewarding and which enrichens ones very soul to the point of elation...........Oh my God im Uttering the rantings of a mad man, To many hours and Sleepless nights I fear..or possibly to much Coffee and im Hallucinating
