Where?

It is on the edge of a town called Almoradi. This is about 10 miles inland from Guademar with it's huge beaches. The apartment itself is on the ground floor and the swimming pool and Jacuzzi are on the roof. The view from the roof is of orange and lemon groves with a backdrop of mountains. The town square is the ultimate place to relax and have a drink or a meal. The town is 27 miles from Alicante airport or 28 miles from Murcia airport. The whole area is covered in golf courses, there must be around 20 of them now and more are buing built.

Taxi licence fee rise peril

A MAN whose stepson was killed by a taxi driver working long hours fears a proposed licence fee increase could encourage Barnsley cabbies to put in extra time on the road.

Stuart Jackson, of Wilthorpe, has criticised Barnsley Council for proposing the change, saying he fears the higher charges could lead to taxi drivers working longer hours to cover the cost.

Mr Jackson's stepson Gary Glymond, aged 18, died while walking home after celebrating his 18th birthday when he was hit by a private hire car driven by Lee Sewell, 26, of Worsbrough.

An inquest heard Sewell admitted he had been working for more than 14 hours before he hit the teenager as he crossed Huddersfield Road in Wilthorpe.

He faces a trial at Barnsley Magistrates' Court next month charged with careless driving.

Mr Jackson, who is campaigning for a change in the law to restrict cabbies' hours, said of the proposed licence fee increase: "It's almost a three-fold rise and will tempt drivers to work longer to cover the cost, potentially endangering other road users. It's pure greed by the council."

Gary's family have set up a petition on the 10 Downing Street website, which currently has 411 signatures, and a group on the website Facebook, with 901 members, calling for a ban on cabbies working long hours.

They are supported by Barnsley Central MP Eric Illsley, who is raising the matter with the Government.

Barnsley Council said it is increasing licence fees from April 1 to be "consistent with the regional average".

Currently, annual fees are around £40 but will rise by £94 for private hire vehicles and £104 for hackney carriages.

The authority says increases are needed to cover extra costs such as "enhanced enforcement activity to ensure public safety, together with other requirements being imposed by Government".

Fees should cover the cost of the licensing operation.

FFS. When will they realise that "averages" have nothing to do with it.

this has blown out of all proportions.....folk are sadly killed on the roads all the time and why Taxi and PH drivers should be singled out when overall they are probably a lot safer than your average driver...even after 14 hours..

If the punters payed more to allow to give us a decent living in the first place we wouldnt be doing such long hours..we cant all afford extra staff cos if we did the staff would get paid and us owners would make next to nowt..
