Does your council require you to have a meter in your PH.
And before CC and Sussex jump in with the appropriate legislation JD has just sent it to me.
71 Taximeters

(1) Nothing in this Act shall require any private hire vehicle to be equipped with any form of taximeter

but no private hire vehicle so equipped shall be used for hire in a controlled district unless such taximeter has been tested and approved by or on behalf of the district council for the district or any other district council by which a vehicle licence in force for the vehicle was issued.

(2) Any person who —

(a) tampers with any seal on any taximeter without lawful excuse; or

(b) alters any taximeter with intent to mislead; or

(c) knowingly causes or permits a vehicle of which he is the proprietor to
be used in contravention.

Council no and the operators don't give a monkeys about anything else other than settle so I guess that's a no as well

Edinburgh have them, and did I not read that Bradford or Leeds or somewhere, where going to introduce them along with a colour code?????
There must be some other councils down there that have them as well.
They should be made manditory and have the same tariffs as the hacks in that area,
As the PH cannot have roof signs this would be another way of protecting the public from bogus PH cars
Then the public could be informed that they should only get into any vehicle with a meter, and council signage, no meter and signage dont get in
There is no reason why a council cannot introduce this measure as a by-law regardless of section 71 (1) as section 71 in the second paragraph says that if the are fitted they must have the same tariff as the hacks and tested and be sealed by the council

Why should it be made mandatory? A lot of private hire cars do executive type work. Are you saying that this type of work should also be on a meter? Most airport jobs are not on a meter. How many hacks do out of area jobs on the meter?

The PH vehicles that have meters here have different tariffs to the HC's and are sealed. It doesn't say that they have to have the same tariff has a HC.

So how do the public know your not ripping them off
I can understand out of area runs like of going to airports and further afield, but for runs all within your own area the meters must be on from A to B
It is the best way forward and could stop the ilegal pick ups by bogus cars, I dont think it will stop ilegal pick ups but that would need the councils and the police to stop that if they would only do the job they are paid to do

Surely if I was going to be a bogus taxi having a meter in my car would just make me look more ligit than if I didn't. IMO there is no way to prevent illegal pick ups the only thing to do is to punish anyone caught severly enough to make others think twice about doing it
