What do you expect when they allow any Tom, Mick or Paddy to have a driver's badge and then allow any of them to have a plate as well?
They now anyone who wants to be a taxi driver can be. It doesn't matter if they don't know where they're going or can't speak the language.
Decent entry standards for drivers would have controlled this.
The market is already massively oversubscribed and as the credit crunch/ recession deepens, it is going to get worse.

The Irish haven't just lost control, they've lost the plot.
I have no objection to bringing in new standards for drivers... but what I would expect is that you would resit your test to show that you are as good as them.

I don't agree. A plate is merely a method for ensuring that a cab meets legal requirements and should be used purely for that purpose. Companies should have to queue like anybody else for a plate if they are restricted. If more plates are to be issued individuals should be given priority over companies providing they meet the quality standards required by councils.

I don't suppose you agree that the Lords titles should be hereditary do you
The problem with issuing licences is how do you be fair, you can have a waiting list and the first name on that list might not have been in the trade for 10 years.... that doesn't seem fair to me, the criteria in Sefton is that everybody private hire and hackney are eligible for a licence.. the conditions they must meet is that they must have been in the trade for the last three years... they must prove this by producing their National Insurance stamps and Tax paid up to date... they would be required to produce a wheelchair accessible vehicle less than three years old, and that they have not been issued a plate before... then all applications would then be placed in the hat..... they would all have exactly the same chance,

Why are we arguing with a European problem even though they have adopted the Uk way of doing things
They should be looking at how they do it all over Europe where they dont seem to have the same problems

So you are suggesting that we adopt the European module which includes metres that give the customer a receipt and are submitted to the Inland Revenue at the end of each year.

What are the entry criteria for PH drivers in Sefton? and what are the entry criteria for HC drivers?

Isn't it true that most, if not all, of these private hire drivers make their living in a neighbouring large city at the expense of the local trade in that city?

The trade in Sefton have worked together (owners and drivers) to keep the hackney trade separate, we have one 180 rank spaces and will continue to create more and discard ranks that have become obsolete, when a new rank is created it means that drivers have to work that Rank even though there might be no work, it takes time to make that into a working rank, the work does not suddenly appear as if by magic as many people seem to think.
now when drivers do this year after year I believe they have a worth and that they are quite entitled to receive a payment for what they have created

Ok, let's see if I'm reading this correctly. The HC trade have persuaded the council to give them 180 rank spaces and they use them. This, you feel entitles the HC owners (not the drivers) to "receive a payment for what they have created" :?

Maybe you should give my regards to Alice

If thats how they do it yes, at least the revenue would know where to collect and find the dodgers

That seems only fair. I have no problem with that.

In fairness, this should also apply to existing holders, to prove they are as good as the new ones.

If the operator is honest, they shouldn't have a problem with this 8)

Disagree entirely. Everyone should have the same chance.
Why should someone new to the trade have an advantage over someone who has been in the trade for years, just because their father, mother, brother, aunt or great uncle bulgaria happens to have been in the trade?

The entry for private hire is exactly the same as hackney, and as for the persuading the council...... that would be naive( no offence) it is a continuous battle.

Well considering that the Inland Revenue approached the meter companies 4 years ago with what they wanted ... it might be a reality sooner than later.

Ok, I'll spell it out:
All substitutions WAV under 3 years old
Every renewal granted only to those who don't hold another plate.

Same requirements for everyone.

well considering we run a mixed fleet..... and every plate can be transfers to either a wheelchair accessible vehicle or a saloon vehicle it would be pointless..... for drivers tend to buy the vehicles that they consider will make them the most money.
