Banned cabbie let down police car tyres


A "RECKLESS" taxi driver from Morecambe who deflated a police car's tyres after he was fined for driving in a bus lane has had his licence revoked.

John Mayor, of Brook Road, was given a fixed penalty notice by a policeman on Spring Garden Street in Lancaster, then later returned to the 'scene of the crime' to let down the officer's tyres.

After being issued with the ticket, Mr Mayor drove all the way around the Lancaster one-way system, parked his taxi on Queen Street - near to the original incident - then crouched down beside the parked police car to deflate its tyres.

When the officer, PC Brian Mills-Woods, returned to his car to collect more penalty tickets, he caught Mr Mayor in the act and arrested him.
Lancaster City Council revoked Mr Mayor's licence in November following the incident on September 20 2008.

Mr Mayor launched an appeal but magistrates confirmed that in view of his actions, he was "not a fit and proper person to drive members of the public".

Coun Tony Wade, chairman of the licensing regulatory committee, said: "The committee was of the opinion that Mr Mayor's reckless actions could have put lives at risk.

"Due to the seriousness of the incident there was reasonable cause to revoke his private hire licence and I am pleased that this decision has been upheld."

I agree...Carrying the public just the same with the emphasis supposed to be on Public transport, Hailed or pre booked the result is the exact same..its moving people for reward..we can be used by the public just as the Buses and Taxis can.

He may be the biggest runt on the planet, but just supposing he had to get to a real emergency, use your hovis CC.

I take it though going by the article taxis are not allowed in the bus lanes there as they are in most of the UK

This is one of those things that I just can't understand why they cannot decide nationally if PH taxis can use bus lanes. We can use bus lanes here and there are obviously other PH that can use bus lanes where they are but whom ever in transport at government level can't make a simple decision over who or who not can use bus lanes. No wonder the trade and the country for that matter is in such mess. It amazes me that any of the politicians get to work it must take all day to decide which foot to put in a sock first

If he'd committed an offence then the police were entitled to issue him with a ticket. Taking "revenge" on the police was a stupid thing to do and always likely to get him a CRIMINAL conviction although I'm surprised that the council deemed it serious enough to make him an unfit person

We have a driver working round here who has a conviction for kidnapping and he was allowed to keep his badge !

It would have been all the same if he had to respond to a serious incident.
This driver had no way to know what that police car would be needed for next. His actions were infantile and stupid.

That's right, he might have had a starsky and hutch type call on his way for the tickets.....or there might have been a brazillian worth questioning after extending a clip of bullets into his head.
