I asked my mate who lives down in London how he got on last night when he got back from Eastbourne?? His reply was,

I got in to London last night at 11ish, tubed it to Hammersmith and just needed to change onto another tube, thought "I'm doing alright here... ", then... my tube cancelled, advised to get a bus.

Next thing, all buses cancelled. There was a guy who knew of a cab office 15 mins walk from Hammersmith station, so about a dozen of us trailled down there with him.

Roads in London at that time weren't too bad, I suppose they were going to get worse but with this weather being predicted you would have thought there might have been gritters about. None of it. Looks like they haven't been out overnight either, because today there are still no buses about, there are also major train delays, lots of suspensions on the tube and travel is I dare say a nightmare, so I've stayed working from home (err... must go and get some done!).

2 things I noted, a bit of snow and:

- coupled with a lack of foresight, London comes to a halt
- a bit of travel chaos, and Londoners suddenly stop barging past each other, start talking to each other and help each other out

found the latter particularly amusing but it was a refreshing change.

I replied, I bet the cab drivers are earning a fortune today? His reply was,

Yep, they'll be loving it. Health & Safety & 'dangerous driving conditions' (a bit of slush on most of London's roads) won't keep them off them, I'm sure...

To be fair to the guy who was taking 4 of us into Surrey, he only wanted to charge £14 for the 4 of us, all going to different destinations along the route. He'd had £30 by the time I got out (was 2nd out), the other guys didn't look bad off, bet that cabbie had a good night, but due to him being honest and helpful rather than trying to take advantage of the conditions.

We were just glad to have a ride, we passed quite a few folks on foot, who'd probably been waiting at bus stops outside of the main centres not knowing what was happening, and left with no option but to hoof it.

I know it well  could always just eat you're way out. Seriously though we're lucky here with the river and mountains we seldom get much snow. The last lot to slow us down was 3 years ago and OMG people can't half moan when they have to wait for a taxi. The fact that I could have pushed my taxi faster and that I slid around every corner, thanks to there being no gritters out before hand, didn't do anything for their appreciation that I was in fact still working trying to get them home. After a while you just start seeing spots before your eyes

Everyone in the close has had the day off today.
I went to work last night at 10/30pm done one job to Lime Street in the city. The council had not gritted and the roads were like skating on ice. Took me over an hour to get there from Holland Park.
Spent most of the journey looking in my rear view and wincing as cars skidded towards my rear.
So like the softy southerner I am, I decided to go home.
It took me two hours to get from Holborn to Harrow as the weather got worst. Lots of cars smashing into each other, mostly inexperienced PHV drivers from warmer climates. The Westway was at a standstill for 20 minuets then started to move slowly. Why is it that when you get stuck in a traffic jam, you desperately need the loo? Or is it just me?
Many Hills around London were inaccessible as cars could get no traction and where they had been trying the snow had turned to compact sheet ice. This was when everyone wanted to be driving a 4x4.

Amazingly the Lorries were still driving like maniacs.

Boris Has personally thanked the London Licensed taxi trade for keeping the capital moving today.

Thoroughly enjoyed the short period I had on slippery roads before the thaw set in!!!

All the schools closed because the teachers couldn't get in; The kids managed it, FFS!!!!

Only worry was whether later weather might give daughter a problem on her way to hospital to see new grandson. Forecast 'dumping' didn't come to anything.

Conclusion: Full working day, plenty busy, made up for lost weekend through mechanical problems.

Where's the recession, I want a rest!!!!

I was due to travel down tomorrow, however looking at the weather for the North East, I think my 'holiday' will be extended to Wednesday.

One foot of snow forecasted! Thats a lot, even for North of Watford Gap.

Local topography protects us quite well from most directions. I think the last real disruption we had in this area which lasted longer than a couple of hours was 1963!!! (Echo 15??)

It's like sex isn't it. You don't know how much you will get or how long it will last!
