Surely we have to give disabled people the choice of car they want to get into when they approach a rank?

But how do you do that without regulation?

Or subsidies? :?

You don't. You have to regulate so that councils will have to offer a mixed fleet of HC's and not just a fleet of 100% WAV's. It'd go down like a lead balloon here if they had to offer mixed fleet that wasn't all WAV. I'd love to be a fly on the wall in our LA's offices if that happened

If the gov made an area 100% HC WAV then I don't think a council would care, as they can just say 'not my fault chap'. :-$

Not sure the gov will be able to regulate a mixed fleet. Who pays £35,000 and who pays £12,000? :?

That's the problem. They don't care about the 100% WAV bit but how interesting would it be to see them cope with a mixed fleet. Lets say those that already have WAV's or HC should stay on them and saloon type Hc's could be introduced :D

I think we should be left alone and be able to just get saloons and MPVs, and leave the disabled to dedicated companies in each area, thats how it works in the borders and has done so for over 20 years.
If someone wants a cab from a rank, they are the ones who can normaly transfer to the cab, if they cannot they phone one of the wheelchair companies

Why should they be treated different to the able bodied?

The problem would be that all laws have a lead time, and I think we all know how many WAVs would be left by day 1.

But that's not how the DDA law works, the folks needing WAVs are not meant to do anything that folks not needing WAVs don't.

They shouldn't but thats the way its always been done here, and it works realy well with no complaints, save on the argument who should and should not have a wav
They just phone at any time and the WAV comes to them

I'm sure it does work well, but they are being deprived of a service according to the law.

Perhaps you should now quote that EEC law to me?

Throughout this document have you noticed how finance and interest on LTI vehicles have conveniently been sidestepped? The reality is that unless you have a spare 30 grand available you are going to require financing. Interest on a new LTI vehicle will set you back a pretty penny bringing the price to over 42 grand or more. You can buy seven second hand saloons for that price and drive around in relative comfort.

Key Assumptions/Sensitivities/Risks

We have assumed that vehicles meeting the enhanced accessibility standard will cost around £30,000 each. Running costs will be equivalent to interim standard vehicles. All vehicles meeting the interim standard will have no economic life left at replacement

Regards

JD
