I think it is criminal to force drivers who have been doing a job for years to sit silly exams. However it is more criminal the way that Private Hire Drivers are not allowed to pick up from the Hackney ranks. It breaches the human rights of the public to be forced to have a Hackney car from say Alliance And Leicester Southport and not be able to ring a Private Hire from there.

You can imagine the exam: multiple choice.


1 Sat outside someone's house what would be a reasonable number of beeps on your horn before you would consider getting out of your taxi and ringing the doorbell.

c 9

2 When would you suddenly brake and do a "U" turn?

a Seen a fare on the opposite side of the road
b Pull out of a side street then do it
c Wait until it causes driver behind maximum inconvenience

3 Why would you park facing oncoming traffic with your
headlights full beam?

a To light up pavement outside a fare's house or, (b) to purposely aggravate other road users.

I think it should read something along the lines of "so long as I don't have to it I don't care who else does"



I take it this guy does nothing else during the day to save his energy for night work



You don't have to be a taxi driver to TEACH as was pointed out to me in another thread. Also the assessors for this NVQ are or were taxi drivers



Better get it done then before that happens



I think this chap would be surprised on how many drivers don't know this but have felt too embarassed to ask perviously so now they can learn and pretend they knew how to do it all along



I personally wouldn't care who taught him so long as they taught the pilot the way to do it and checked that the pilot could indeed land the f in thing



If he shouts loud enough they probably will at the expense of the driver

Yes we've had to do it for about 2 years now. Whilst it didn't touch on anything I hadn't already known it didn't bother me to have to do it either. In fact I quite enjoyed meeting other drivers. I think the course content could do with improving to perhaps include more of the regulations but it covers the basics which is all a level 2 is required to do. I've probably learnt more by way of regulations on here

If an NVQ is basically on the job training how can an assessor judge what a cab driver is doing?

I thought a driver couldnt carry another passenger without the express consent?

You get 'express consent' from the passenger before you start the journey. If they refuse, the assessor gets out and waits for the next job.

It's surprising how easy it becomes if the obstacles in one's mind are removed.

I wonder if the assessor is aware of express consent?

My assessor was put out of my vehicle 4 times and none of those ocassions were because the passenger objected they were all due to there being too many passengers. My assessor explained to passengers what was going on and asked if it was ok for him to stay in the vehicle they all agreed it was fine. Some passengers even said when leaving the vehicle "good luck I hope you've passed"

I always get the impression of hadacourses and ainthadacourses in all of this.

I would say it would be a fail if any of the options were used CC.

But when you consider that these questions are from the VRQ and not the NVQ then you would also have to consider that there is a huge bank of questions that can be used when the VRQ exam is taken correctly.
