Sorry to spoil a media myth, but this law ended when the last horse drawn cab was licensed in London in 1947.

According to section 51 of the London Hackney Carriage Act 1831, a London Hackney Carriage, by law had to keep a bale of hay in the boot to feed the horses. So I do believe it is one bale of hay. I also think it is no longer a requirement but I could be wrong

Did a London hackney have a boot in those days?

Regards

JD

The trunk, or boot, of an automobile or car is the vehicle's main storage, luggage, or cargo compartment. Trunk is used in North American English and Jamaican English; boot is used elsewhere in the English speaking world. In earlier usage, a boot was a built-in compartment on a horse-drawn coach, used originally as a seat for the coachman and later for storage.

Before anyone gets carried away with the 1831 act I should inform you that every section of the act has either been repealed or ammended. Those nine sections highlighted are still in force in their amended form

A bale of straw is still used on the Thames to indicate the headroom of a bridge is restricted (but open to traffic).
By night a single white light is used.
