In my neck of the woods etiquette is dead and buried and nothing that cab drivers do anymore, surprises me. I don't know the full circumstances of what transpired on the morning in question or how hectic it might have been at that particular time but perhaps the poster has the incident on his conscience to make an issue of it on TDO? In my opinion you either practice etiquette or you don't.

Under normal circumstances I would have got out of my cab and asked the driver in front if he was working or alternately ask the passenger to wait for one moment until it was clear the driver in front had a job. I find it quicker to do the former and get out of my cab and ask the driver in front if he is working.

The person who took the job in question knows his own limitations and only he knows if he would do the same thing if circumstances were different.

In Manchester I can honestly say that the game is well and truly faacked and that is partly because of the disintegration of good manners and propriety. I suspect the rest of the UK is not much different and reading some of the comments so far would certainly confirm my observations.

I can’t leave this subject without proportioning blame in Manchester and as ever candid as I am I can honestly say that there are two elements that have greatly contributed to the erosion of propriety in that fair City.

One is the over supply of vehicles and the other is the cultural divide between the majority of drivers who are Asian or other ethnicity and the minority of drivers who are indigenous Brits. I’m afraid that is the reality of the situation and I have no qualms in saying so.

JD

Strange, we havent a large ethnic population here, but the asian lads who drive cabs are really decent guys.

Whereas some of the white blokes are complete idiots

The asian lads always pass fares forward to the first car......unless of course they hold me in such high regard that they wouldnt dare steal the bread from my table? Which I doubt.

That's in stark contrast to what happened to me not so long ago when i was fist cab and several punters approached the cab behind me who incidently was second cab and also Asian, he put them in and refused to put them out, the reason why is because the job was worth fifty pound. I know all about being first cab and the second cab pulling a flanker and I'm always alive to it but in this particular instance I wasn't paying attention.

What happened to me is a common occurance in Manchester but if somebody does it to them then they don't like it. There is only one word for these type of people and that is azzholes.

Regards

JD

I can't speak for the HC's in my area but I do know that there is little or no etiquette here regarding PH. Once upon time if a customer called 2 companies and both cars turned up at the same time both would pull off. That is not the case now. There has been many a time I've pulled off only to see the other car returning for the pick up. It's not just other companies you have to worry about either. I've pulled up at a pick up point for customer only to see them get into another of our own vehicles. It's very much a dog eat dog world here

I had the same experience the other week.

I turned up at an address knocked on the door and waited a couple of minutes.....another cab turned up and I said I'd already knocked on the door, but it was obvious that the punter had called two cab companies.

I suggested that the punter could f*cking walk.....to which my colleague agreed, we both pulled away, me in front.

My colleague then did a U turn and went back into the cul de sac.

IMO I don't think there is much chance of the law being changed so that you have to take your turn on the rank

Why does the law need changed skippy......if I see a nice BMW on a rank why cant I hire that?

Why do I have to hire Mr Shed McSweatyminger who is first?

Are you part of a national body or union? If so why dont you propose it?

If not, why should people bother with what you want?

That aside, I actually agree with your sentiments.

Could you bring this up in your taxi magazine then CC.
As I have said before first from the rank gives everyone a fair chance of earning, even rent a ming.

Or even make recompense for your past rank indiscretion's

I dont have a magazine.....I write in a couple.

I have no rank indescretions.....even I cannot make policy

Although, I will mention or ask the question in the next couple of months, the March articles have already been submitted.

I'm sure if you wish to write to the editor.....the letter would be published.

You cannot pass a law that restricts the publics right to choose what cab they want to use and it is debateable whether you can make it an offence for a cab driver to take a fare when they are not fist cab on a taxi rank. Therefore it would appear to me that legislation is out of the question.

Could it be introduced as a by-law in unrestricted areas to give everyone a fighting chance :?:

No. It would be seen as anti-competitive.

I'm quite happy with it. Some you win, some you lose.

I look at it on the basis that he's got my £3.00 fare and the next one is the £30.00 fare!!!

With the boot on the other foot, some may be quite happy to leave the back of the rank with a £3.00 fare.

At the end of the day, the customer has the choice; He can either ride in a dustcart or a limosine. It may encourage some drivers to clean up their act, their car and themselves. I am definitely against forcing a customer to ride with someone they do not wish to.

Sorry, waffling, I take a rest for a while!!

You could always punch the culprit and perhaps set fire to him?
