Police probing drivers’ penalty points dodge


SIX cabbies have been arrested following a police investigation into drivers allegedly paying others to admit speeding offences on their behalf.

The investigation has looked at the alleged practice of drivers who have been caught speeding, but persuaded others, with few or no points on their licences, to admit the offence and accept any penalties.

Six drivers from Westcliff and one from Southend have been arrested by the Safer Roads Bureau, based at the county’s police headquarters in Chelmsford.

Essex Police spokesman Bill Stock said: “Six people have been arrested on suspicion of perverting the course of justice in connection with speed camera enforcement offences in the Southend area.

“Officers from the Safer Roads Bureau arrested them on Thursday, February 5, following investigations into alleged attempts to avoid paying speed fines.

“Five men from Westcliff, aged 52, 46, 29, 27 and 25 and a 19-year-old from Southend were arrested.”

All six have been bailed to appear at Southend police station on Tuesday, June 2, pending further inquiries.

One of the firms being investigated is Radio Cars, the largest private hire cab firm in Southend.

Managing director David Burch said: “We are concerned to learn of these alleged offences against a number of licensed drivers within Southend.

“However, Radio Cars is not prepared to take any action of its own at this stage, until it is proven the allegations are founded.

“Naturally we will co-operate fully with our local licensing authority and assist where possible in this investigation.”

Working on the theory that bobbies stop you and not cameras flashing at you. Last time I was pulled for speeding the police man asked me if I used my mirrors and if I did why didn't I see him. I said I did see a car behind me in the distance but I didn't realise it was a police car cos it didn't have any lights on the top followed up by a really sorry look. I was told off and then he reversed at the traffic lights and went into the other lane

TBH, I can see this sort of thing happening more and more.
When you consider the amout of time we spend on the road, statisticly we have more chance of getting caught by a camera.
You could say that as proffensinal drivers we should be aware of our speed, but sometimes we can be day dreaming and were caught.

does anyone think that when the licensing of offices comes into play in Scotland in April that the offices will have to take action against there cars that break the law

They will be responsible for any bookings taken, but if a driver takes a job that wasn't booked, then I doubt one can blame the operator for that.

They would be complicit if the hire was taken from an illegal PH rank, such as the one at Fat Sam's.
