Taxi boss, drugs baron to hand over £416,000

A GLASGOW taxi firm boss who was jailed for three years for money laundering has been told to pay £174,712 under Proceeds of Crime legislation.

And a drugs baron serving a 12-year term has agreed to hand over £242,125.

Peter Smith, 40, of Old Castle Road, Castlemilk, and John Gorman, 51, of Ayrshire, made a brief appearance at the High Court in Edinburgh as a judge was told confiscation actions brought against them had settled.

Advocate depute Barry Divers asked the court to record "the proceeds of general criminal conduct" by Gorman at £760,658.

The prosecutor said the £242,125 to be taken from Gorman amounted to his realisable assets. The money is to come from his interest in property at Townhead, Irvine, and in the village of Innellan, near Dunoon, along with cash.

Smith was caught with £400,000 of dirty cash when police stopped him in a Mitsubishi Shogun in the South Side of Glasgow in May 2006.

Detectives found a case in the car with £389,035 in used notes, along with £10,010 in another bag.

Smith claimed the cash came from a deal to sell his share in Domino Cabs, but a jury found him guilty.

The cash payment is early release money.

Pay the cash, do your time, and you'll probably serve less than half of your sentence. I bet the deal was struck in chambers before sentencing was even passed.

What a fecking legal system . . . .

Seems a good deal to me.

Give what you have plenty of (money) to buy what you have little of (time).
