Taxi drivers want a curb on new licences


A TAXI drivers’ group wants a cut in the number of licences given out to new drivers.

Alan Kirkham, chairman of Tendring Taxi Drivers’ Association, claimed many people had lost their jobs and decided to get a licence from the council to become taxi drivers.

He said Clacton was being flooded with cabs, leading to overcrowded streets and lean times for taxi drivers.

“All the drivers are suffering.

“They are not making the same amount of money,” he said.According to figures provided by Tendring Council, which licenses taxis and drivers, during 2008 there were 46 new applications for licences for taxi drivers, and an additional 40 cars were licensed.

However, over the same period, 45 drivers withdrew or had their licences revoked and licences for 31 vehicles were surrendered. This means that overall, there was only one extra licensed driver and nine more cars registered as taxis by the end of the year.

The association has now arranged a meeting with Tendring Council to discuss whether it is possible to set a limit on the number of licences given out each year.

In the past, Mr Kirkham has accused the council of turning its back of the needs of drivers.

He said he was hopeful the association would turn a corner at its upcoming meeting with the council, where itsr proposals will be considered.

He said: “They are going to start working with us, not against us.”

Nigel Brown, Tendring Council’s communications manager, said: “The council said it was more than happy to stage a meeting – to include the chairman of the licensing committee – and has been waiting for the association to come back with potential dates.

“So far, none have been put forward.

“Depending on the outcome of those discussions, there may be matters which can then be put before the council’s licensing committee for members to consider.”

It would appear that the market is working. If the quality is right then all OK, IMHO.

I would think it’s the same as a lot of another people trades want to a curb on things, Ie stores popping up on every corner sell alcohol and cigs, restaurants, Takeaways.
But hey that’s how the world is.
People think its great income so they jump on the wagon

It gives customers better service

That my opinion

Does it give a better service?

Sure they may get a cab quicker....but will the cab be serviced?

Now before someone jumps on me.....yes standards and enforcement are important....just like Cardiff

I take it they are talking HC licences. Perhaps there is a greater increase in PH licences which will ultimately have an effect on available work

I can understand why some drivers want restrictions on numbers, but it's a flawed solution.

Improve the standards of drivers instead and everyone wins.

I think one of the first posts I ever put on here related to the natural expansion of PHV in areas where HC is limited.

In areas of deregulation, HC will exceed PHV numbers.

Good quality control then helps in the provision of first class customer service and vehicles. We ain't that far off that ideal here, IMHO.

Sorry London is a bad example....20,000 HC's and still 40 odd thousand PH ain't it?

And still a massive problem with illegal plying.

Birmingham.... great deregulated place....has been for years.....is it 1000 HC's and 4000 PH? and a massive plying problem?

I could move on to the smaller hicksville areas.....where quality control has led the HC trade into PH.....do you know some areas have no or under 5 HC's yet hundreds of PH? due in no small part to the costs of HC being too anti competitive?

Quality is an option......but how overbearing can it be?

The answer is in front of most peoples faces with decent surveys, but that don't have too many fans in certain quarters.

The way things are going there will be no hacks left, as owners and drivers are realising that to make money its better to be PH as you only have one rule that is do not pick up unless your booked
Then in some areas its a dam site cheaper option than forking out for a wav
