Taxi drivers' awards




FIFTEEN Bromsgrove taxi drivers were awarded Road Passenger Vehicle Driving NVQ qualifications in a ceremony held on Monday.

(23rd February.) A mix of hackney carriage and private hire drivers collected their certificates from councillor David Hancox, chairman of Bromsgrove District Council’s licensing committee, at the Council House.

The NVQ assessment, carried out while at work, demonstrates the driver’s safety and efficiency has been comprehensively tested.

The course was run under the Government’s Train to Gain scheme in partnership between Bromsgrove council other organisations and local employers. The course is still running and full funding is available for Bromsgrove drivers who meet the eligibility criteria of the Train to Gain scheme.

As a Government initiative to set standards for taxi drivers, the Road Passenger Vehicle Driving NVQ is expected to become a part of hackney carriage and private hire licensing requirements in the 2009 review of licensing policy.

Sharon Smith, principal licensing officer at Bromsgrove District Council said: “I’m really pleased that so many of our hackney carriage and private hire drivers have already completed the course. They have taken on this work voluntarily as the scheme is not yet a Council requirement. The awards ceremony on Monday recognised their hard work.”

I started my NVQ/BTEC on Monday.

What a pile of poo. Government wasting millions of pounds making people go through hoops, kindly laid on the ground so nobody stumbles.

This world is getting weighed down with idiots getting in the way of us going about our business.

My assessor repeatedly stated 'we won't be telling you anything you don't already know, we will just be making you realise that you knew it'.

Frigging marvellous.

In some areas if they want their badge they need it. How much more need do you want?

I said I am yet to be convinced the existing trade need it.

If your reported or appear in front of an LA for breaching rules.....then sure make the culprit take an NVQ or BTEC.......but to make all drivers take it, just to show an LA as a leading light has nothing to do with the job, and more to do with the LA's ego.

New applicants....yes possibly.

As I said....I'm yet to be convinced....although my mind is opening.

The problem with waiting for drivers to be reported before they have to do a Btec or NVQ is that most people can't be bothered to contact the relevenat authorities to make the report to. Others contact offices were the taxi is from who do nothing. Some people might contact the relevant authorities but then can ony give a brief description of the driver or the cab i.e it was a black cab?

I'm not going to try and convince you that this is a good thing but what I will ask is why do taxi drivers think that they should be the only trade in the country that doesn't have to do this or in the case of some trades an even higher level of training?

The taxi trade and PH trade and the LA's are aware of who the sh*t in the job are.....and I know they can do all kinds of lovely things to catch them.

That aside.....are our LO's trained to some-kind of qualification?

OK...that's tongue in cheek...if the government want us to have qualifications why not change the law?....it would be a little quicker.

Bloody hell....a Half day course on how to be nice would be cheaper than an NVQ...we have so many Non qualifications and a dumbing down of the good old fashioned qualifications that none of these Pseudo Certificates or Qualifications mean Diddly Squat nowadays...

At least two trade bodies would agree at the moment yes.

It would be quicker because if the government made it the same prerequisite as say a UK driving license then everyone would have to take a course.

It doesn't. How the hell can they tell someone who's been doing a job for 20 years they aren't doing it right? The mind boggles.
