80 of the drivers are jockeys on wages?

they arent profit sharing, the bag goes to the owner....

The jockeys earn between 40-50% of the takings depends on what deal the owner offers them.

Try telling the taxman that, or the DSS that the driver is self-employed/NMW doesnt apply...kerching, see you in court

None of the jockeys/owners or myself have had a problem with it for the last 18 years!

YET.....

This debate is nothing new, infact when i first got my badge (20 years ago) the scare mongerers were talking about exactly the same thing then and nothing ever came of it. Like i said previously, we've not had a problem in 18 years.
Out of curiosity....... how many of your owner drivers are VAT registered.

I'm sorry but You would need to ask then that question, it just wouldn't be proper for me to start discussing their business arrangements would it? Nice try though.....LOL

Jockeys on 50%?

I hope they are not jokeys then, cos that would leave peanuts for the car owner, they must be hireing/paying rent to the owners surely?

Why, If the jockey takes £750 in the week, the owner is getting £375.

who pays the fuel, insurance, radio rent, tyres, servicing, wear and tear, replacement/depreciation (for the extra shifts worked), and lets be fair, do jockeys/drivers take as much care of a vehicle as an owner does, and what % of fares get declared....

When i started driving cabs i earned 33.3% of takings, i felt this was a fair deal, in fact i still do, the problem is that one bright spark owner comes along and offers 40%, he puts a few car's on the fleet and appears to be doing well, so all the jockeys want to work for him. Competition amongst the owners for the best jockeys eventually lead to some jockeys earning 50%, which i agree is simply too much.

I am not a fan of jockeys earning such high %'s, in reality it can't be sustained and the owners will suffer because of it, when they realise this (some already do) perhaps they will all come together and forge an agreement between them to pay a more realistic % to jockeys that can be sustained long term.

Jockeys pay for nothing apart from our £2.00 shift charge, which we would drop if they were all on say 35-40% of takings, it really is something that the owners need to address. I personally have offered this advice to several owners, unfortunately to no avail so far, it may be something that we need to push further.

One problem is that if the owners at the other circuits in town don't do the same then we would all be back to square one, IE jockeys leaving my circuits owners as they can earn a higher % of the takings else where........ Any idea's guy's?..... What do the jockeys earn in your area? Do you consider they get a fair deal on your circuit?...... What works for you?

The drivers in Sefton either rent vehicles on a day or night shift...or...24/7 at a agreed rental..... Many years ago..... mainly due to the fact that the VAT informed owner drivers that they were exceeding the VAT threshold.. it was explained that an owner operating a percentage rental should be calculating the full amount of his and the other person's takings as a whole... before any expenditure ...ie. his takings 40k nightman 40k total 80k.
