Have a rule in place which says you will not entertain a request just for a woman or man.

Then the she/he can never be offended.

not sure you can refuse a request for a lady driver...

Of course you can refuse the request.

Would they agree to a request for a male driver only?
What about a white driver only?
Or how about "must be a muslim"?
Discrimination law works both ways.

Female driver only discriminates against male drivers, regardless of the reason behind it.

so the customer has no rights?

if the passenger was a female alone, or worse still, lets say shes getting over abuse/rape/etc, cant they request a lady driver? if the passenger is a youngster placed in the vehicle by a parent, cant that parent request a female driver?

im yet to read of any attack on a passenger by a female drive, hack/PH or "minicab"...

Hirer can request whatever they like.
Granting that request may be an illegal act.

Which you most certainly can. Even if it is not illegal, you certainly are not legally obliged to grant such a request. 8)

so then, what can a punter request within reasonable hopes of getting it?

i always thought the customer comes first, if a lady driver was requested off me id have to say i havent got 1, if i had one id be happy to oblige

if you have a womans refuge nearby they usually always request a female driver

maybe as a PH operator im more customer focused than a rank hack

Anything legal which the operator is prepared to supply, and anything illegal which they are also prepared to supply, depending on the operator.

As I said above.

That doesn't make it legal. As I said, they can request whatever they want. It is the operator's decision whether to acceed to any request and for them to justify their actions, if required.

Irrelevant. PH or hack are equally capable of obeying the law - or not.

feel free to "hack" off all your customers, it can only benefit the PH trade

The Customer always comes first......but only if we chose them as Customers in the first place.

Scenario, since you are fond of them.

Suppose your PH circuit has a regular customer who does a £300 round trip twice a week, Monday and Wednesday nights. She always asks for a female driver. There is only one female driver on your circuit who therefore always gets the job. £600 for her two nights work, while you and the other male drivers make a couple of hundred if your lucky.
What happens if one or more of the male drivers see a lawyer and claim sexual discrimination? After all, the female driver is making £400 a week more than anyone else simply because, as sussex said, she doesn't have a willy.

Now suppose you are the circuit owner.
How much do you stand to lose in damages and legal costs?

thats her good luck, if that passenger WANTS a female driver she should be able to HAVE one, the driver could chuck her radio in, save £60+ a week and take the booking direct, i couldnt complain then could i...

can a consumer be accused of sexual discrimination? i doubt it, they have the choice to buy or not, according to your scenario if you ran a shop the customers would have what you had, not what they wanted, and you would soon lose em

if the lady punter decided to check out hacks on a rank, and the 1st (or only) lady driver was near the back, she could get in that.....

what about the PH base who get a request for "an estate car" to do the 300 mile job twice a week and theres only one on the circuit? same thing...
