OVER 90 serving Merseyside police officers have been convicted of criminal offences.

Figures obtained by the Liberal Democrats show that nine were dismissed but 82 were allowed to keep their jobs.

The city-region's force refused to detail the types of crime, but elsewhere more than half were related to speeding and other offences ranged from violent assault and theft to drug possession and kerb-crawling.

Nationwide 1,063 officers have had criminal convictions over the last five years - 77 for violence and 96 for dishonesty - and 210 have been sacked or forced to resign.

Cheshire Police have had 19 officers convicted, nine of whom were dismissed. Lancashire Police refused to give details despite a formal request under the Freedom of Information Act.

Shadow Home Secretary Chris Huhne said: "It is staggering that so many of the people entrusted to to protect us from crime have criminal convictions themselves.

"It is even more worrying that so many officers convicted of serious crimes involving dishonesty or violence have been allowed to keep their jobs.

"Allowing them to continue serving brings the vast majority of law-abiding and diligent officers into disrepute. Police forces should get tough on bad apples."

The Association of Chief Police Officers said that each case was judged on its merits and the officer's record, and it is "very rare" for people with previous convictions to be recruited.

Depends what they are, speeding is counted as a conviction, I'd be mighty peeved if I lost my job for doing 40 in a 30 zone?

I thought a road traffic offence wasn't classed as a criminal offence?

Dundee's chief constable was recently caught speeding and a member of the council said this proves he is human.

We also have a serving chief constable being arrested for a hit and run death in the west midlands and charged with death by dangerous driving this week, the sad thing here is he prob knew he would of got done for causing death by dangerous driving, so decided to take his chance.
In most other countries the pedestrian would be done for jay walking, and would have been tough luck if killed. this happend on a dual carrageway

A lot depends on the nature of the offence, if someone broke a Greenhouse Window or got caught with Cannabis when they were 17, I can't see how that would bar you from a career in the Police, or indeed any other responsible job.

One driver up here was reported for stealing apples ,something everybody did when they were kids what he failed to mention was that he stole them from tescos

Interesting response. I take it that they think we should not know. It would be interesting to know how many people have been convicted on the evidence of these officers for the same crimes that these officers committed themselves.
