John, the Council consulted 1 Private Hire firm who don't run on meters, the trade was asked and we rejected it.

Well quite frankly I find that astonishing. A council who implements a Hackney Carriage fare increase does so by consulting a Private hire firm for its opinion. I must admit Nigel I find that a little hard to swallow.

I wouldn't withdraw your services at this moment in time, that would only hit you and your colleagues hard in the pocket. Doing it on a weekend may not get the full support of all the drivers. A clear managed strategy has to be thought out but perhaps there are other things that can be done first.

This increase effects the public so why don't you get your Taxi trade represented Mr. Kewal Krishan of the Taxi Federation to write to the local newspaper outlining the full facts of the situation.

You would have to put across that there is a total unanimity of drivers against this increase.

Put across that the official trade body or individual Hackney carriage owners and drivers were never fully consulted on the issue. You could make it clear that this is not the end of the matter. Even at this late hour if the council doesn't reconsider their decision and listen to the reasoned arguments of the Taxi trade, the trade will be left with no other option but to bring their grievance to the streets of Mansfield. This will be done by way of demonstrations and perhaps more drastic measures.

State that you want to call on the support of the Mansfield public in order that the voice of the Mansfield Taxi trade may be heard loud and clear.

There is nothing more powerful than the press and public opinion, so try and mobilise public opinion by making this letter your opening salvo.

Urgency is at a premium, if your going to write to the local press you may as well write to every National Newspaper including Television media.

You like a good scrap Nigel, "here's one right in your own back yard".

Just one more point, if you do write to the press make sure you include the fare increase which you the drivers wish to see implemented.

Best wishes

JD

I wounder if Nigel could comment on the statement from the council which said "The council says local firms were consulted about the plans and seemed happy at the prospect of extra income".

What has it got to do with the local firms?
They only deal with pre-booked work, not rank or path work.

The council said they consulted local firms. I assumed, that when they consult local firms for a Hackney Carriage fare increase that they would consult only those firms which used Hackney Carriages on their Radio circuit.

A hackney carriage is a Hackney carriage with or without a Radio. Perhaps the council thought there were more Hackney carriage owners and drivers working for Radio companies than there are actively involved in the local Taxi Trade organisation.

In order to get proper feedback the council would have to consult widely would it not? Who knows what was in the mind of this licencing committee when they went about their business of increasing the night tariff and who knows how widely they did consult? certainly not you or I.

Best wishes

JD

Up to a couple of years ago the people deciding Brighton tariff were two operators.
The council felt it easier to deal with them than the split taxi unions.
At long last the unions now deal with the tariffs. But to be honest the ops did a better job.

It was in the local press and BBC East Midlands today on Thursday. We are at a dead end John. The increase goes in the local paper on Wednesday for 2 weeks then it's wait 2 weeks for objections from the public. All the drivers are sending in letters objecting to the increase. If anything comes of it who knows, it's a closed shop now at the Council John, they decide what they want, vote on it then tell us it's been passed.

When did we walk away Geoff? We have tried to work with the new Council for the last year but they don't want to listen, everything is decided in closed meetings then we are told this is whats going to happen. Yes i do want to bring this Independent Council to it's knees because it's full of people who don't know what Independent stand for. We have a Mayor who apparently has a string of criminal convictions, we have a licensing officer apparently who has convictions for fraud, we have a Councillor apparently who has a GBH charge against her. This is a Council who won't have a CRB check for it's elected Councillors, I wonder why??????????????

Well according to you and I must confess its all I have to go on you walked away from the table during a meeting when there was more taxis required at weekends and stagecoach asked for a subsidy are you saying now you didnt?

oh dear Nige what Am I going to do with you? the reason your council does not insist on crb checks for councillors is that how a councillor qualifies for office is in an act, its got nothing to do with the council.

the population of Mansfield decides who it chooses for council not the council.

now nige its better to keep quiet and be thought of as ignorant than open up and confirm it.

your council Nige is seen as one that does a good job.

We all walked away from the meeting Geoff, we organised it before the meeting started, even the PH association walked out of the meeting.

It's ok for people to represent us who have criminal convictions then? Last year when they were asked to take a CRB check they said no. The Labour had one why don't these lot?

yes it is ok, because the law says so, who has any right to stop the electorate for voting for who they want?

labour can do what it likes for thier own, for others they cannot stop a valid nominated candidate, from going to election.

thats a fact.
