Taxi driver appeals over dog ban

A Shropshire taxi driver who carries her dog in her cab for protection has been told she must stop.

Linda Hughes never used to travel anywhere without Anna, her one-year-old German Shepherd, until the council decided the animal posed a safety risk.

The Ludlow taxi driver often takes passengers with guide and hearing dogs and the council said there was a danger Anna could fight with other dogs.

Ms Hughes has appealed against South Shropshire District Council's decision.

Under the Disability Discrimination Act, which came into force on 31 March this year, taxi cabs must take passengers with guide dogs and hearing dogs for the deaf.

Ms Hughes said Anna had never had a problem with other dogs.

"There is nothing in any legislation to ban me from carrying my dog, there's been no problems, no complaints to date with any other animal," she said.

"I've carried several animals belonging to my clients, disability dogs, and my dog is well socialised, there's never ever been a problem."

Graham Jones, South Shropshire District Council's principal environmental health officer, said: "Our main concern is the conflict between her dog and any other dogs that need to be carried.

"There is a significant potential for difficulties."

Ms Hughes' appeal against the decision is due to be heard on Thursday.

So the council isn't worried about the hound biting a person, just another hound.

Must confess.

I come from taxi driver stock and in the 1960's our town was populated by over a 1,000 irish navvies working on a big construction site nearby.

Whenever my old man went out after midnight he took our family pet, a huge German Shepherd dog, who laid quietly on the floor in front passenger seat well.

The old man left the front door locked and insisted punters sat in back (Morris Oxford, huge, proper back seat).

Loads of stories to tell about the dog scaring [edited by admin] out of [edited by admin] paddys.

Best one was when a guy jumped over into front seat and found growling dog with his head one inch from his privates. Poor chap messed himself :D

About 5 years ago I picked a punter who recognised my families good looks. After a couple of seconds he said 'is that [edited by admin] dog still alive?'

I do not believe I am reading this item in the newspaper regarding this taxi-driver and her pet dog.
What the hell is happening in this trade?
My bitch is always wanting to come with me on my night shift, but have told her to stay in and mind the kids.
However I always take my favourite pet with me,but have now been charged with, tugging my tassel in front of one of my passengers, this due to me keeping freddie my ferret up my leg(only to keep him warm).
Money for my defence will be gratefully accepted.
Please send cheques or postal orders in the name of Roland Ratman c/o
TDO.
Thanks,
Roland

Well if he supports the dog in the car, then the council need no more evidence than this, to show they are right in refusing it.

the article does not mention what sort of taxi it is. WAV or Saloon? if it is a saloon then i can see their point, possibly even going against the conditions of the licence by reducing the number of seats and people the car can carry if there is a big dog in the front. but if its a WAV with a partion the surely its not a problem.

I'm pretty sure it was a saloon.

But it seems the council weren't worried that the dog would bite any punters, just other dogs. :?
