Thanks to all the drivers who turned out tonight at Albert square. The protest was reported on Channel M news and I expect it will be in tomorrows Evening News and the Stockport Express on Wednesday

Cabbies in convoy protest
March 28, 2009

CABBIES gathered in Manchester city centre to protest against taxi deregulation.

Around 50 black cab drivers took part in a convoy which circled the town hall for over an hour in a demonstration against Stockport council plans to deregulate black cabs in the town.

They said they were also protesting against job cuts at the MEN Media-owned Stockport Express in a shake-up which will see the paper's editorial team moved to Manchester.

Posters in the cab windows read: 'Keep the Express in Stockport' and 'No deregulation for Stockport cabs'.

Traffic was briefly brought to a standstill when they stopped their taxis on Albert Square.

Organiser Dennis Kidd said: "The Express has publicised our plight and supported us and now we want to lend a hand to them. This is a peaceful protest and is not designed to cause disruption. We just want to keep these issues in the public eye."
