Taxi drivers to take qualifications

DUDLEY taxi drivers will be made to take a new NVQ qualification as a condition of their licence.

From April, taxi drivers in the borough will be required to pass a level two NVQ and VRQ in road passenger vehicle driving within 12 months of their licence being granted.

The course will be delivered by a qualified trainer and covers everything from health and safety and legislation to customer service and dealing with passengers with disabilities.

Councillor Adrian Turner, cabinet member for personnel, legal and property, said: “We are the first of our neighbouring authorities to include this course as part of licence conditions. The council is working closely with the learning skills council and Dudley College to offer all drivers the opportunity to easily access this course.”

Mohammed Ali, of Dudley’s taxi and private hire focus group, said: “This course provides drivers with valuable information and offers reassurance to the travelling public that their comfort and safety, when travelling is taken seriously by drivers.”

A list of approved trainers can be obtained from Dudley Council’s licensing team.
