Five arrested after teen falls from taxi


FIVE people have been arrested after a teenager fell from a moving taxi in South Tyneside.

The 18-year-old was among a group of four or five teens who jumped from the black cab as it slowed to take a bend on Hedworth Lane, Jarrow.

It is believed he may have fractured his skull in the fall, which happened at around 3.45am on Sunday morning, and he is now in a critical but stable condition in hospital.

A 17-year-old, two 18-year-olds and a 19-year-old have arrested on suspicion of making-off without paying and bailed pending further enquiries.

A 60-year-old man has also been arrested and bailed on suspicion of dangerous driving.

Detective Inspector Paul Gilroy, who is investigating the incident, said: “A group of four-or-five youths had got into the taxi from a nightclub in South Shields to travel to Jarrow.

“When the taxi slowed to negotiate a bend on Hedworth Lane all the passengers alighted. from the taxi.

“However, one of the youths has apparently fallen and suffered head injuries.”

'Taxi-jump' teenager is critical

A TEENAGER is critically ill in hospital today after apparently trying to flee from a moving taxi without paying the fare.

The 18-year-old was found unconscious at the side of the road in Hedworth Lane, Jarrow, with a serious head injury, early yesterday morning.

It is believed he had been out at a South Shields nightclub, and was heading back to Jarrow with four teenage pals.

Initial inquiries by police said the reveller may have fallen from the eight-seater minibus.

It is thought the five passengers tried to get out of the moving taxi as the driver slowed to negotiate a bend outside the Greyhound pub.

The alarm was raised by the driver, who found the teenager at the side of the road, unconscious and bleeding from his ears.

Paramedics were called and treated the teenager at the scene before taking him to South Tyneside Hospital with a suspected fractured skull.

His condition is today said to be critical but stable.

A 17-year-old, two 18-year-olds and a 19-year-old have been arrested on suspicion of making off without payment.

The 60-year-old driver was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving is still currently helping police with their inquiries.

how can they do him for dangerous driving....he cant drive and stop a bunch of pricks from jumping out all at the same time..effing idiots..

I think they were just following procedure. If he had nothing to do with it then he has nothing to worry about

Teenager dies a week after falling from Jarrow taxi


A TEENAGER has died a week after falling from a moving taxi.

It is believed the 18-year-old fell or jumped from the moving car as it slowed to take a bend, in Jarrow.

He suffered serious head injuries in the accident, which happened during the early hours of last Sunday morning.

And he died on Saturday at Newcastle General Hospital.

A 60-year-old man, who the Chronicle understands to be the taxi driver, was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving, last week, and is still on bail.

Four teenagers - two 17-year-olds, an 18-year-old and a 19-year-old - were arrested on suspicion of making off without paying.

The lads had allegedly been at a nightclub in South Shields before taking the taxi home to Jarrow.

A MAN has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving after a teenager died when he fell from a taxi.

The 18-year-old victim was fighting for life after falling from the moving cab on Hedworth Lane, in Jarrow.

He was taken to South Tyneside Hospital with a suspected fractured skull where he later lost his battle to survive.

The accident happened in Jarrow, at around 3.45am on Sunday, March 29.

It was initially thought that the teenager was part of a group of five teens who jumped from the black cab as it slowed to take a bend.

Two 17-year-olds, one 18 and a 19-year-old were arrested on suspicion of making off without paying but were later released without charge.

A 60-year-old man was also arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving but was bailed pending further inquiries.

He has now been charged with causing death by dangerous driving and will appear at South Tyneside Magistrates Court on Wednesday, November 25.

A spokeswoman for Northumbria Police said: "A 60-year-old South Shields man has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving following an incident from which a teenager fell from a moving taxi in Hedworth Lane, in Jarrow, in the early hours of Sunday, March 29 2009."
