so duty is linked to the rate of inflation?

It is now:

Quote:
Fuel duty will rise by 2p a litre in September, only six months after the 2p increase on April 1.

Tax on petrol and diesel will also rise by 1p a litre above inflation each April for the next four years, under increases announced in the Budget.

Grandad is right. There could be a reduction in duty, if the rate of inflation next April is in negative territory (deflation). The rate of deflation would have to be low enough to result in a decrease of at least 1p. I can't be bothered doing the maths, but it would probably need to be around -2% to achieve any reduction.
It's not very likely, but it is possible.

It wasn't linked to inflation until today...........now it is.
The fuel price escalator seems to be back

he slapped 2p duty on per litre with no mention of inflation, if he does that when theres MINUS inflation, WTF will he do when it +5%?...

nah, he just needs the money, hes no intention of linking it any % inflation up or down.

No mention of inflation on this year's 2p.
Inflation + 1p each year for the next 4 years is what he said.
Whether that gets stuck to, is another matter.

Fuel duty from 1/4/09 = £0.5419 per litre of diesel

Will rise to £0.5619 in September.

Assuming inflation is at 2% next April, the rise will be:

(£0.5619 x 2/100) + £0.01 = £0.021238 or 2.1238p

making the duty:

£0.5619 + £0.021238 = £0.583138 per litre

This is added to the sale price at the pump and the total is subject to VAT at the prevailing rate, currently 15%, rising to 17.5% in December.

but theres no automatic link between inflation and duty, he slaps it on willy nilly per ltr

this what he actually said, with no excuse for the first 2p rise due in september...

Quote:
I will continue to monitor oil prices, but I expect that fuel duty will increase by 2
pence per litre in September, and then by 1 penny a litre above indexation each
April for the next four years.

he didnt mention inflation, just indexation, presumably the RPI then?

and notice the next rise is due 6 months after the the 2p rise (by april 2010) so thats 3p extra duty in 6 months...plus the vat on the 3p, so by april 2010 fuel will be at least 3.5p a ltr more than now without the oil companies upping the price...

If you look at your first post on this topic you will see that YOU put INFLATION where YOU have now put INDEXATION!
