Tube workers to strike over pay



Workers will begin a 48-hour strike at 1859 BST on 9 June.

Transport for London (TfL) said instead of engaging in "meaningful talks" about pay the RMT had submitted "a wildly unrealistic claim".

The strike is expected to bring most of the Tube network, used by more than three million passengers a day, to a standstill.

Confrontational approach

The RMT said the ballot result was "overwhelmingly" in favour of strike action with 2,810 voting for and 488 against.

It has accused LU of refusing to abide by an agreement which ensured job security and ruled out compulsory redundancies which would put 3,000 jobs at risk.

A five-year pay offer by LU has also been described as "unacceptable" by the union.

The RMT's strike is also in opposition to TfL's planned £2.4bn efficiency savings package across the whole network - buses, trams and Docklands Light Railways - which the union warned could lead to compulsory redundancies.

RMT general secretary Bob Crow said: "This is a magnificent result which underlines the anger that has been provoked by management in their confrontational approach on pay and job security.

"If LUL and TfL want to avoid confrontation they should withdraw their plans to slash jobs and guarantee there will be no forced redundancies, start talking seriously about pay and call off the bully managers."

TfL said the RMT had demanded an "unrealistic" 5% percent pay rise and was against cutting back office jobs that had been duplicated as a result of maintenance firm Metronet being taken over by LU.

Real-wage increases

A TfL statement said: "The RMT leadership has failed to engage in any meaningful talks on pay, instead submitting a wildly unrealistic claim - demanding a 5% pay rise for fewer hours in the middle of a recession.

"On jobs, the RMT leadership knows full well we are seeking to end the duplication of back office jobs and that no front line staff will be affected.

"Our offer guarantees real wage increases for the next five years. Very few Londoners have that level of certainty for the future.

"This review does not impact on front-line staff working on trains, stations or maintenance and there will be no impact on Tube services."

LU has offered staff a 1% pay increase in the first year of the five-year deal, with increases of 0.5% in the next four years

Stagecoach round here are going on strike sometime in June over a new pay deal, if the last one is anything to go by it will indeed be a very good day.

Talks break down over Tube strike

The RMT wants a 5% pay rise and no compulsory redundancies
Millions of commuters and visitors to London face travel chaos after talks aimed at averting a two-day strike by Tube workers broke down.

The announcement was made after 10-hour talks failed to produce a breakthrough in the dispute, over jobs and pay.

The walkout, which is expected to affect the entire Tube network, was triggered after a Rail Maritime and Union (RMT) ballot last month.

The strike is due to begin at 1859 BST on Tuesday and end 48 hours later.

Normal services are expected to resume on Friday morning.

Transport for London (TfL) described the RMT's decision to call for strike action as "outrageous", following London's Underground's offer on Friday.

It offered staff a four-year deal of 1.5% this year and then the inflation rate plus 0.5%; or a two-year deal of 1% now and inflation plus 0.5% in year two.

But the RMT wants a 5% pay rise and a promise of no compulsory redundancies.

TfL's transport commissioner Peter Hendy said: "The RMT's leadership has shown yet again that no matter how far an offer is made, they would rather strike than talk.

"Their attitude is a slap in the face to all hard-working Londoners and businesses struggling through a deep recession."

'No agreements'

Docklands Light Railway and London Overground services will operate as normal.

Transport for London (TfL) has said there will be 100 extra buses, extra river services, taxi-sharing at major railway stations, escorted commuter cycle rides into central London, additional cycle parking and a free river shuttle service to help travellers get around London.

"Pay as you go" Oyster cardholders will be able to use National Rail services in London on Wednesday and Thursday.

TfL staff will also be on hand across the bus network and at Tube stations to offer travel advice and distribute walking maps in central London.

RMT general secretary Bob Crow said the union had made every effort during the talks to reach a deal with London Underground.

He said: "Not only could the management side not reach an agreement on the kind of deal needed to end this dispute, they also found it difficult to stick to existing agreements on redundancies.

"The strike will now go ahead and we expect it to be solidly supported."

The union balloted up to 10,000 of its members, including drivers, station staff and maintenance workers.

What a shame the 200 new members of the RMT London Taxi Branch will have to stay at home in solidarity with their brothers who are on strike, unless they are planning to scab the action? At which point you have to ask yourself . . whats the point of joining the RMT if you're not prepared to stand shoulder to shoulder with your fellow members?

Surely this would apply to all unions who have members from various occupations such as the GMB. Was it not this type of behaviour where unrelated workers would go out on strike in support of their 'brothers' from other occupations that seen the strength of the unions weakened in the 80's
