Court bill of £423 for taxi damage

A man who smashed a taxi cab’s window after a fare-paying row with its driver has been ordered to pay £350 damages.

Brett Taylor, 20, of Birdham Road, Brighton, admitted a charge of criminal damage at Brighton Magistrates’ Court and was given a 12-month community order.

The court was told that on May 18 Taylor was picked up by a taxi driver from Sevelands Close, Whitehawk, and taken to Portslade.

As they arrived, Taylor told the cabbie he did not have any money to pay the fare so the driver turned around and took him back to Whitehawk.

On the return journey Taylor smashed a window, causing damage worth £350.

Police were called and the officers arrested Taylor and later charged him with criminal damage.

On top of his community order Taylor was ordered to pay the £350 cost of the window and the £30 fare as well as £43 court costs.

He also agreed to attend an alcohol treatment programme.

Mick Hildreth, the National (Provincial) Hackney Carriage and Private Hire secretary of the GMB union, said: “We welcome the sentence imposed by the court and hope it acts as a deterrent to others.”

I'm led to believe that this particular thug was kept company by a number of cab drivers whilst waiting for the police to arrive.

How very nice of them. :D

I think in this case the lads didn't really turn up as the driver took the cab back to the biggest taxi rank.
