I am a bit stuck as to how to proceed in getting new radios and would be grateful if someone could help?

I need some new taxi radios for new drivers and am not sure where to buy them from and what to buy?

I currently use Maxon PM100 radios which I find ok but am not sure if they are the best and is it best to stick with Maxon?

In one of the offices i used to work at the boss was able to talk to all the other radios from his radio whereas all the other radios are stuck to talking to the operator and thats all, where do i get one of those radios from?

Also, what frequency do I need to tell the people I buy a radio from to get the radios to work, on my radio licence i have , 'Base Tx' 'Mobile Tx' Channel Width' 'CTCSS Tone', really confusing to a newbie like myself!

I also noticed a base station for £299 plus VAT, is it any good?

http://www.radiowarehouse.co.uk/display ... 12&clue3=0

If anyone can help ASAP as I need a radio I already have tuning in and I need a new radio for a new driver ASAP as I have now run out.

Thanks very much for any help guys.

There are plenty of companies which supply new or used 2 way radios.
Give them a photocopy of your licence and let them sort it out.

You can ask them to program a radio to switch between base or mobile by pressing a button.
(Although this may not be allowed under the terms of your licence, most will do it anyway  )

You can find used sets on ebay if you know what you are looking for.

i`ve been using maxons for 13 years now and never had a problem not even a faulty mic i find them decent enough units to use 8)

i have talk through aswell ( car to car ) but legally licensed on a low band frequency through a repeater mast and it gives me decent coverage ( radius of 30 miles from repeater i`d say in any direction so in theory cars can be 60 miles apart and still reach each other if offcourse repeater is between the cars )

yours will most probably be high band ( vhf ) radios around 165 mhz to 175 mhz ,measure the length of your car antennae whip if it`s around 40 cm then your high band nearly all taxi companies are high band getting a low band frequency is pretty rare these days antennae whip lengths for that frequency is around 100 cm

if you need new radios give me a shout i have a good contact for those

Thanks for the feedback guys.

I have no idea if I am on high or low band, I have my licence but it does not say what it is and I am not sure how to find out, any clues anyone?

I have been looking on ebay for some radios as they will do the job for half the price of new sets so shold save alot of money. Still dont know wether to stick with Maxon or mix and match!

Can anyone tell me the difference between standard and talk through base stations? The very old base that we use now is just hold the mic and talk to all the drivers and the drivers can only talk to the office no other radio.

Can anyone tell me if there is someone near to Wrexham who sells, services and programmes taxi radios? Had a check around the internet but not found anyone local?

Look on your licence and if the frequency shows more than 100Mhz then you’re using Hiband.
If it’s below 100Mhz (which is unlikely) then you’re using Lowband.

Some say one radio is better than another but these are just personal opinions. The reality is that all radios work and basically do the same job so it doesn’t matter which type you use.

Get all of your radios programmed normally (i.e. one channel) but have your own programmed with two, where channel 2 has the transmit and receive frequencies reversed. That way it will work as normal on channel 1 but on channel 2 you will be able to talk to other drivers from your car. I think that’s what you’re looking for?

As regards your nearest radio dealer, possibly Dee Communications in Chester but you can use something like Ebay providing the supplier agrees to program the sets for you.

unlike the firm who bought in some "radios"!....

pye mx293

tx freq, 193.6625
rx freq 203.9625

ex bus channels from the 70`s!

he wondered why he`d never got a bill reminder from RIS/DTI/OFCOM

they`d forgotten about him!

Ha Ha Nice one Derek

I was in Peterborough all day Tuesday doing the rounds. What a place to get to; was behind the same lorry all the way from Leicester to just outside the town.

Yep, all fine and dandy Derek. was just checking out a number of enquiries in the area that hopefully might bring a bit of work your way.

As for the other bloke’s trademark oil stains, I think it’s all a ploy to get the company to stump up for a new bike.

I’ll give you a bell as soon as I get more info.

Bill :)
