HARLOW: Taxi Drivers Get NVQs In Safety and Good Service

Taxi passengers in Harlow can ride more safely after 65 drivers took part in a pilot scheme by training for their NVQ in Road Passenger Vehicle Driving.

The cabbies on the course learned about the Disability Discrimination Act, personal and passenger safety, customer services and the provision of tourist information on the city.

The course was run by two of the town's largest private hire operators, A&Bee Cars and ABC Cars, with the aim of helping taxi drivers develop their skills and knowledge and at the same time gain a nationally-recognised qualification.

Those who passed then attended a graduation ceremony at which they were awarded their qualifications by the directors of their employing companies.

The qualification also earned them a VRQ in Transporting Passengers by Taxi and Private Hire and is equivalent to five GCSEs at grade A to C.

Places had been offered free to eligible drivers in the town through the national Train to Gain project.

Comments from the drivers show that however experienced they may be, they learnt a lot from the course and subsequently recommended it to their colleagues.

Anne Howes, training manager for ABA Training, said: "We are very proud of all the drivers who have shown such dedication and enthusiasm in successfully completing the course. This course has been a real success and much of that is due to the way drivers have supported and encouraged each other in taking up the challenge of learning new skills to improve their service.

An NQV = 5 GCSE's at grades A-C?

What a total nonsense!!!

Five GCSE's at those grades is the minimum requirement in most schools or colleges to study for GCSE 'A' levels & hopefully eventual university entry.

NOW!!

Let's see how many of these successful NVQists can go to college & pretend that they have sufficient acquired knowledge on the strength of their NVQ only to start a GCSE 'A' level course, even in skipping with a rope.

No chance!!

An NVQ is nowhere near the level of 5 GCSE's at grades A-C!

The woman is an idiot!!

Knowing that CC has read and looked into the quality of the courses available he knows there are good and bad providers and it's wrong of him to tar all with the same brush. Also knowing that he does realise some drivers need to be trained he must understand that to get a uniformed trade everybody needs to have the same quals. It's sad but true that this is not happening

Please see my last post on the 'unhappy in Lincoln' thread. It would appear that not only is it a money racket for unscruplous trainers it's all ok'd by the trade reps

Anyway as is well known by now I believe drivers should have a recognised qualification and the NVQ as unsuitable as it may be to some drivers, it is all we have at present. It is a minimum level qualification so I don't see why people are expecting such a wonderful course

I merely asked if they could quantify the following;

How can they say that a driver who has an NVQ drives safer than one that doesnt? Is the NVQ now a driving assessment too????

I suppose they assume, which is wrong of them, that because a driver has been made aware of 'risk assessment' that would make them safer cos they believe that all drivers will do exactly what is suggested they do on the course

What a load of Bull, I've never heard so much crap in all my life. Simon from Sun Skills Training is not my mate after yesterday. He caught me on a bad day.

Seeing as you can get a GCSE for just turning up and spelling isn't that important she might just be right

I think in theory the idea of qualifications for drivers is good it's just some of the course content is a little weird and lacking

There's also the problem of some of the providers that are not being checked out properly by the relevant bodies in the educational system
