Hi all - I'm not mechanically great, so forgive any ignorant comments. We have a Fairway Driver which wont shift from auto 1. Manual gearbox is fine. It started to go bad after we took it into a garage for a oil-leak fix and it may be significant that he topped up the gearbox oil. A few miles after we drove off, going from 2-3 was erratic and we reverted to using manual 1-2 then shift to auto. This worked for about 10 miles and then stopped. Note however, that we had similar symptoms before when the engine oil got low because of the leak. The garage has looked at it again and eliminated a number of possibilities electronically. He has a hunch it is electronic and this may tie in to earlier alternator problems where we finally had to use a King Cab alternator to get it to work. I have replaced the AT Control unit to no effect and the manual is of no great help, missing one of the most important checks. Even LTI were unable to help with that, regardless of it being their manual !

My personal hunch is the gear-oil quality\quantity, but meanwhile if anybody has any thoughts or can tell me where I can find the 'speed sendor', I would be most grateful. I refuse to accept that the gearbox is duff as it was only replaced a year ago (allbeit with a recon) and I cannot entertain that possibility as we are living in Sweden and replacing it would cost a small fortune. Oh, so does the mechanic by the way. He is English and only does english cars. He knows his stuff, but we all miss things in our chosen profession sometimes. Although I feel a little morally cheated, I can't be doing with paying him £100 an hour to not fix our taxi any more !

Oh - has anyone ever tried an additive like Lucas Transmission fix in the gearbox ?

I am in Skane on the west coast between Malmo and Helsingborg. Löddeköpinge just south of Landskrona. Free board and lodging in beautiful Sweden in return for a fix ! I'm not in a great hurry as it costs a fortune to keep the thing on the road, but I can't bear to see it terminally immobile in the garage. Ideally I'll have it road worthy just in case we need it - its also pretty galling having to take two cars everywhere when we have visitors etc.

I'm going to have a look at the transmission level and maybe change it once I can get the battery charged enough...............................

get a new battery, they go without notice, then go on line and order the parts required from the UK it will be cheaper, or get the ferry over.
Get the engine started and try to warm the gear box, you will need a gearbox oil filter, drain the oil then remove the gearbox sump, inside you should see a flat plate like a baking tray, with some kind of screws holding it remove these, and inside you will see the filter clean everything off then refit the new one and replace everything in revers order, refill the gearbox sump slowly, then keep selecting 1st and reverse until the oil level is at the max on the dipstick do not overfill, take it for a run to warm everything then recheck the level.
The new oil will smell like raspberry's, the old oil will smell like its burnt

Thanks for the input. I can get parts from the UK no problem hopefully so will probably get a new filter and sump gasket as required, but it will be a while before I can get that far. Time more than anything else.

Meanwhile, having got her going and run through the gears whilst stationary and also jaunted up and down the road, the transmission oil level has gone from being too high when cold to too low when hot. This is rather odd as the garage topped it up supposedly and whilst I do see a little leakage on my garage floor, I assume it would take more than a small puddle to drop below the lower level.

So, I'm going to get some Wynns transmission additive and whack that in to top it up I think. Or I might get gear oil. Or both probably. In fact, I'll probably drain the whole lot before measuring how much I put in. But then that might be no good if the filter is duff and I'll double spend on oil, which isn't cheap here. I'll find out how much the parts are first I think.......

We have a house near Sodertalje, by Malmsjon lake.

What on earth made you take a Fairway to Sweden? Taxi Stockholm had 5 on their fleet for novelty value back in the mid nineties, but have all since retired.

In answer to why we brought our taxi here .....well it seemed like a good idea at the time ! It was one hell of an adventure too after it was broken into a couple of days before we were due to go and they bust the alternator ! No electrics pretty much once we got off the ferry in Denmark and about 8 hours to get to our place in Sweden with no lights in the lands of manditory headlightage. Swiss family Robinson meet Swedish family Robinson and eat your heart out.

Anyway. I finally bought a battery. Cost the best part of £200. Ouch. Taxi fired up straight away....and then died. I have worked out that if I pump the fuel filter, it goes for 30 secs or so, so my fuel is not flowing. I see from another similar post that this turned out to be the fule pump. Thats otherwise known as the 'injector' right ? I am guessing that does some form of sucky thing to get the fule from the tank, through the filter......

My ignorance hurts sometimes.

Sodertalje eh. We are visiting Stockholm for the first time in a few weeks - I'll wave on the way through !

I haven't got that far yet ! I need to get the darn thing running properly before I tackle the gearbox. Slow progress I know ......I honestly think the garage messed up and topped up with the wrong transmission fluid though. This seems unlikely, but really does fit what happened. So, if the new fuel filter (coming from UK around 30th July) fixes the running problem (in my dreams!) I am then going to invest a further £50 in new dexron fluid.

Just back from Stockholm. Forgot to look out for the taxis - too busy crying over the price of a meal for the family8-(

It worked ! I must admit I'm staggered. OK, it did not fix my gears, but at least I have a running engine again now. New replacement fuel filter from Online Automotive went in. Pumped it up and heard a bit of hissing, which turned out to be coming from a slightly frayed inlet pipe (no hissing before, so this was sort of encouraging....). Chopped a bit off the pipe and put back on, pumped up, started and she is now purring like a kitten again.

So, now back to the transmission issue.....I'll let you know.

Thats enocouraging,the inlet pipe might have been leaking before and let enough air in to stop the pump working.
At least you've a running engine now,hopefully you'll have the same sort of success with the gearbox.
