For the purpose of just passing a D1 (minibus) test i need to provide a minibus...(bit obvious)

BUT, if i can borrow/hire one, am I a "Learner" driver in it till I pass a test....

(Ive a full B licence with C1,and D1, but the D1 has a 101 restriction)

If you passed your test before 1995 you can drive a mini bus with 16 passengers, after that date your restricted to 8
But if you want to take 16 as hire and reward you will have to sit the test.
You could also drive a 72 seat double decker on your licence if you have the pree 1995 licence as long as there is no more that 8 on board

101 restriction will mean 8 passengers only until you pass the test
If you know someone who will hire you a 16 seat bus there will be no problem

Answer is Both...pass your Motor Vehicle Driving test before 1995 you can drive up to 16 passengers in a Minibus but not for hire or reward, but not if the Minibus is a PCV Licenced Minibus and where it would still require L Plates and for you to have a qualified PCV driving instructor with you. but if you pass your Motor Vehicle Driving test after 1995 you would need L plates on any Minibus with 8 or more passenger seats and a qualified instructor with you...then when you pass your test the 101 comes off your licence and your a fully qualified D1 afterwards...with just the hassle of CPC training which all professional PCV drivers who hold a full, valid category D, D1, D+E or D1+E licence will from 10th September 2008 need to complete the 35 hours of periodic training by 10th September 2013, pass your test after10th September 2008 and you will immediately begin your period of periodic training and will need to complete 35 hours of training within five years of attaining their initial Driver CPC. this is a snip at approximately £1250 for 35 hours of training and then you will have to complete only one course of 35 hours of Periodic Training every five years.

see...nice and simple...no wonder I jacked in my Minibus Phase..wasnt worth the grief.

I didn't think the repayment bit could be enforced?

Depends on any conditions applied by the hire company and their insurers. Ask them first.
