uk drivers rules were pre-tacho days when you could just say you were driving for 4 hours[log it in your log book] when in reality it may have been 6 hours because your boss said he needed the goods in london by midday or they will loose the contract. I them were the days :D

Well this is all rearing up again - it's making the national news on Radio 2 today http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/8203775.stm

Drivers hours are always going to be problematic - if you can't earn enough in a time limited environment what about taking on something else. Multi drop deliveries on the side perhaps, using the firms Van with no Tacho, the Taxi driver's "knowledge" is great, especially if making home deliveries! Just one example where the Authorities would struggle to supervise or enforce any "Driving Hours" directive.

Done right however it could even be beneficial. I know this is controversial, but if Driver numbers (not vehicle numbers) are regulated in an area at a sensible level then perhaps there would be work enough in the time limited environment. Broad brush, the Day drivers don't stay on into the night - the night drivers don't start early - both to "make up the difference".

Of course to work, both Hackney and Private Hire driver numbers have to be regulated. If someone leaves to "Go back to tools" the vacant space has to be filled - the "badge" has to be returned. Perhaps not using the badge for a month sees forfiture, this allows the committed driver a holiday without fear of loss of living.

This would mean surveys have to be carried out in Vehicle Number regulated and unregulated areas to stay on top of demand levels.

I just know that this is going to put the cat amongst the pigeons.

There is a smalll problem with regulating ph drivers and that would be in so far as you can't really tell a private company how many people they can 'employ'.

I do however agree that the high standards to be applied should be on the driver and not just the vehicle. You also have to consider the fact that there are union members that believe you cannot put 'false obstacles' in the way of becoming a driver or indeed in enabling somebody to earn a living.

No need to tell a private company how many drivers to employ. The drivers' hours are what would be regulated, along with the number of badges issued - if I'm reading this correctly.
Any limit imposed on companies would only be via the number of licenced drivers available.

If it were statute law, the views of union members or anyone else wouldn't matter.

BTW Some union members believe the royal family are parasites and the police are an instrument of state control. Both are still here

Pretty certain it will never happen.

That's not because I don't think it's necessarily a bad thing, just that the laws could never be enforced, if they ever get passed.

It's a sad fact that to earn a good living out of this trade folks need to work more hours than they should.

Problem we have is too many idiots work longer hours than is really safe.

Maybe a council should decide what hours are acceptable, and then raise the tariff to ensure drivers still earn their money.

Chances of that happening however remain slim.

It really needs to be put into perspective, as ever a scape goat and once again the taxi driver.

If they are going to do this then why stop at our trade! how many companies could survive if their "Reps" who are bombing up and down motorways from one end of the country to the other had to comply with Tachograph legislation.

Now I mentioned "Reps" how many other professions would be affected?

Personally I do not think that it is enforceable but in the event of it being tried I do not think that we should take it laying down. One way of getting it stopped would be to high-lite as many other professions as possible, on that basis G.B would close down.

Why do people think it's not enforceable.... it would be the simplest thing in the world .... a taxi meter that shows the time you start... and the time you finish..... just make it compulsory in all private hire as well..... and Interlink it with the Inland Revenue..... simple..... Anyone caught playing with their meter.... immediately revoke their licence.

Rightttt - so you could not get hold of another meter? Aaand how do you legislate for 2/3 members of the brotherhood working the same car.

My meter (cygnus mr400) allows separate log ins with separate pin numbers. The technology is out there, they only need to use it.

How enforceable has the smoking in cabs by drivers ban been?

Aren't the tax laws quite stringent, yet how many of us pay the exact about of tax that we should.

Enforcement is only going to happen if the will is there to do it. The biggest downfall will be manpower. There simply aren't the resourses available to enforce anything properly, let alone drivers hours.

I suppose in that case I could take my rest period when I am on a quoted distance fare and my meter is turned off.

I think you will find that even when your meter is turned off it is still adding up the miles driven and the time taken.
