Police Find Knife in Birmingham Taxi Driver Murder Case

Aug 12 2009

The weapon believed to have been used to kill a Birmingham taxi driver in a brutal murder has been recovered, police have revealed.

A knife was discovered in Mohammed Arshad’s Ford Galaxy after he was stabbed to death last month.

The father-of-three died in Selly Oak Hospital hours after being found fatally injured in Wast Hills Lane, Hopwood, on the Birmingham-Worcestershire border on July 22.

A post mortem examination showed he had suffered multiple stab wounds to the head, one of which had punctured his skull and brain.

West Mercia Police have put up a £10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the murderer.

They have also released a composite image created from CCTV pictures of the man who is believed to be Mr Arshad’s last known customer.

Detectives said that the person who carried out the attack is likely to have had blood on their clothing.

Det Supt Sheila Thornes said: “We are still appealing for the male calling himself Peter who made the telephone call from the kiosk in Monyhull Hall Road at 8.19pm that evening to come forward.

“If you know anyone who came home that night with blood on them please contact the incident room.

“If they are not responsible they can easily be eliminated from our inquiries.

“This was an unprovoked attack from behind. Mohammed Arshad was going about his normal business, working hard to provide a service to his community.”

Mr Arshad was married with three small sons and he was a self-employed taxi driver for A Cars, based on the Pershore Road.

He was dispatched to Monyhull Hall Road after a man, who gave his name as Peter, called A Cars from a kiosk outside the Spar shop at 8.19pm to book the cab. Mr Arshad collected the fare ten minutes later.

Det Supt Thornes revealed that at 8.36pm the taxi was seen by a witness in Wast Hills Lane, in Kings Norton.

She added: “The vehicle was observed turning in the road before driving off towards Redhill Road. The witness then saw Arshad lying on the verge.

“He was taken to hospital with serious head injuries and died a few hours later.”

The taxi was found abandoned about a mile away in Shannon Road.

She added that there had been an excellent response to a number of public appeals and she wanted to thank witnesses who had already been in contact with information.

She added: “A CCTV trawl of the area has revealed some images of that person and we are appealing to him or anyone who knows him to contact us.

“We want the public to tell us who he is and where he is from.”

Mr Arshad’s brother-in-law, Mohammed Sheraz Hussain, who has also worked as a taxi driver, had previously said that Mr Arshad would never have put up a fight if someone tried to rob him.

Mr Ashad’s body was flown back to Pakistan for burial after a funeral service at a mosque in Small Heath on July 24.

Cabbie Death Prompts DNA Testing

17th August 2009

Police investigating a taxi driver's death are asking men living on an estate near to where his vehicle was found to supply DNA samples.

Mohammed Arshad, 36, was found injured in Wast Hills Lane in Kings Norton, Birmingham, on 22 July.

Police will take photographs of males aged 14 to 40 from the Hawkesley estate and ask for a DNA swab and a copy of their fingerprints.

Mr Arshad's blue Ford Galaxy taxi was found abandoned in Shannon Road.

'Tremendous support'

He was discovered with severe head injuries in Wast Hills Lane and died the following day in hospital.

The father of three had been stabbed several times in the head.

Hundreds of homes will be visited over the next few weeks and residents will also be shown CCTV images of a man police believe was Mr Arshad's last customer.

Det Supt Sheila Thornes, who is leading the investigation, said: "These house-to-house inquiries are part of a process to trace Mr Arshad's killer and eliminate members of the public who were not involved in the crime.

"We are keeping an open mind as to the motive of the killing."

She added police "are receiving tremendous support" from the community on the Hawkesley estate.

Det Supt Thornes said: "(We) are still keen to speak to people who recognise the man in the CCTV image or can help us identify a man calling himself Peter who rang A Cars at 8.19pm on Wednesday July 22."

Mr Arshad, a self-employed taxi driver for A Cars in Birmingham, was found seriously injured by a member of the public shortly before 2100 BST.

Police have offered a £10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of Mr Arshad's killer.

Wast Hills Lane is on the border of Birmingham and Worcestershire. Shannon Road is about one mile (1.6km) from where Mr Arshad was found.

Knowing the Hawkesley Estate as I do, the police have as much chance of the residents offering to give voluntary DNA tests as they have of knitting fog.

There are that many scumbags on that estate that for every second DNA test that the police carry out, they are sure to solve some other crime.

Taxi Driver Murder Hunt DNA ‘Will Be Destroyed’

21st August 2009

Police mounting the mass DNA screening of men on a Birmingham estate as part of the hunt for the killer of a taxi driver today reassured people their samples would not be kept.

Detectives are visiting homes on the Hawkesley Estate, Kings Norton, in the hope it will help to flush out the man who murdered father-of-three Mohammed Arshad.

The 36-year-old was repeatedly stabbed in the head and left for dead in a quiet country lane on the border of Birmingham and Worcestershire minutes after picking up a passenger in Kings Norton on Wednesday, July 22.

Murder detectives now want to take fingerprints, photographs and mouth swabs of every male aged from 14 to 40 on the Hawkesley estate.

The DNA will then be compared to evidence recovered from the scene.

Det Supt Sheila Thornes, who is leading the murder hunt inquiry, stressed the samples would be used for “comparison with this case only” and destroyed afterwards.

“They will not be used for any other cases and will not be recorded on any databases,” she added.

Detectives have identified three priority areas to target for DNA screening.

They will begin by focusing on 360 homes on the estate, which was built by the council in the 1970s to house people moved out by the clearance of back-to-back housing in inner-city suburbs. They will then radiate out into two other areas.

It is thought it could take up to six weeks to complete the screening of people on the estate. Det Supt Thornes also appealed for help to find the keys to Mr Arshad’s taxi that was found locked in Shannon Road, Hawskeley, about a mile from where he was attacked. She said if anyone had the keys, but was not responsible for the murder, they would not be prosecuted for minor offences.

I don't believe it for one minute; they will be used & screened for other past crimes.

If they are not, then the police would be failing in their duty to detect crime.

They're bound to have a breakthrough after this. the (school gate) image was surely clear enough for someone to positively ID him. Was the fact the actor was left handed have any significance? If so it'd narrow the suspects down even further.

The reconstruction was scarily real. It mirrored some of my darkest fears, as I'm sure it did for most of us.

Several people have contacted police saying they recognise the voice of a man who claimed to be the killer of a Birmingham taxi driver.

Didn't someone phone the 'Yorkshire Ripper' inquiry many years ago claiming to be the murderer & threw the whole inquiry out, only to be caught many years later for mis-leading the police?

I hope this has not happened again in this case.

Taxi Driver Death - Was Phone Call From Murderer?

4 September 2009

A chilling recording of a man claiming to have killed taxi driver Mohammed Arshad was heard for the first time on Wednesday night (September 2).

The anonymous 999 call made on Sunday evening was played during BBC1's Crimewatch reconstruction of the murder of Mr Arshad who was subjected to a frenzied attack in Wast Hills Lane.

Viewers heard the male voice say: "You know the murder on Hawkesley? I'm him." When asked by the operator if he is saying he did it, he replied: "I'm telling you I done it."

A police spokeswoman said at this stage they could not rule out it being a hoax or a genuine confession.

The call was made at 7.03pm from a phone kiosk in Redditch Road, near the junction with Burford Park Road.

The kiosk is on the outskirts of the Hawkesley estate in Kings Norton where Mr Arshad’s Ford Galaxy taxi was found abandoned shortly after the fatal stabbing.

Detectives are now following up around 40 calls generated by the programme which went out on BBC1 at 9pm.

Detective Superintendent Sheila Thornes, leading the investigation, said: “We are pleased with the general response to the Crimewatch appeal and our officers are already acting on some of the information we have received.

"More information has been coming in today [Thursday] and all the calls we have received will be followed up."

Callers have claimed they know the identity of a man shown in CCTV images who police want to talk to in connection with the case as well as the man who made the 999 'confession'.

About half the calls were taken in the Crimewatch studio during and after the transmission, while the rest were received by West Mercia Police at the major incident room in Redditch Police Station.

Det Sup Thornes added: “We would obviously like to thank all those people who have picked up the phone already to try and help us and urge anyone who has not yet come forward with information to do so.”

Forensic samples are still being taken from male residents aged between 14 and 40 on the Hawkesley estate for elimination purposes.

Detectives have also re-appealed for the driver of a red coupe car seen in Wast Hills Lane from about 8.40pm on Wednesday, July 22, the night Mr Arshad was found injured, to come forward.

He died in hospital of stab wounds to the head the following day.

Anyone with information should call 0300 333 3000 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
