Taxi driver’s licence suspended for year

A taxi driver from Burton has had his licence suspended for 12 months for failing to stop at the scene of an accident.

A meeting of North West Leicestershire District Council’s taxi and private hire sub-committee heard that Akhtar Zaman was involved in an accident with a motorcycle in South Street, Ashby, in December, 2008, while he was driving his taxi.

Following the collision, Zaman drove off, leaving the motorcyclist, who has not been named, lying in the road with multiple fractures to his ankle and a dislocated elbow.

He appeared at Leicester Magistrates’ Court in January when he admitted charges of careless driving and failing to stop at the scene of an accident.

He was fined £300 and received eight points on his licence.

Because of his conviction, the council’s licensing officers referred the matter to the sub-committee and asked members to consider whether Zaman could still be regarded as ‘a fit and proper person to drive a Hackney carriage’.

After a meeting lasting more than two hours, members of the committee decided that Zaman should have his licence suspended with immediate effect for a year.

Councillors say the decision was made due to the serious nature of the incident, which they described as ‘unacceptable’.

Sub-committee chairman Nigel Smith said: “Irrespective of the pressures that you were under at the time of the accident, it is not acceptable for any driver, let alone a professional driver, to leave an injured party lying in the road.” Speaking after the verdict, Alison Smith, environment champion for the district council, said she believed the committee made the right decision.

She said: “We are continuing to clamp down on taxi drivers in our district that do not meet the conditions of their licence.

“This case was particularly serious and the committee rightly recognised this and suspended his licence to drive a taxi.”

So are they assuming that in 12 months time he will be 'fit & proper'

Note to self: Just because it pops into my head does NOT mean it should come out of my mouth!!

It drives me f***ing mad.

Why not just take his license away, and say he can reapply after 12 months? Then they can assess his 'fit and proper' status then.

Alas we have in this country 100s of kangaroo courts operating under the name of licensing committees.
