Tributes To York Taxi Driver Wayne Robert Wilkinson Found Hanged In Haxby
Saturday 5th September 2009
Tributes have been paid to a 44-year-old York taxi driver who was found dead in a wooded area near the city.
The body of Wayne Robert Wilkinson was discovered on Wednesday. A dog walker came across his body hanging from a tree near playing fields in Haxby.
Tim Brown, owner of the York-based private hire taxi firm Telecars Taxis, where Mr Wilkinson worked for a period of time last summer as a private hire driver, described him as a good driver and a “good-hearted fellow”.
He said: “He was a conscientious worker, always careful with his customers. He was always smartly turned out when he worked for us. His vehicle was always immaculate and he was very proud of the way he looked after customers.”
Mr Brown said: “He was very much a sociable fellow.” Mr Wilkinson, who lived at West Nooks, Haxby, also worked from York Railway Station as a hackney carriage driver for about two- and-a-half years.
Keith Hatfield, manager of Station Taxis, which is based at the station, said: “It’s a very sad occasion.”
Speaking yesterday at the opening of the inquest into Mr Wilkinson’s death, York coroner Donald Coverdale said: “I’m told that he (Mr Wilkinson) had a history of some psychiatric problems and had the benefit of psychiatric care.”
He said a post-mortem examination had been carried out and the provisional cause of Mr Wilkinson’s death was hanging.
He adjourned the inquest for a date to be fixed. The Press reported on Thursday how police believed there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding Mr Wilkinson’s death and were not looking for anyone else in connection with it.
