Tributes To York Taxi Driver Wayne Robert Wilkinson Found Hanged In Haxby

Saturday 5th September 2009

Tributes have been paid to a 44-year-old York taxi driver who was found dead in a wooded area near the city.

The body of Wayne Robert Wilkinson was discovered on Wednesday. A dog walker came across his body hanging from a tree near playing fields in Haxby.

Tim Brown, owner of the York-based private hire taxi firm Telecars Taxis, where Mr Wilkinson worked for a period of time last summer as a private hire driver, described him as a good driver and a “good-hearted fellow”.

He said: “He was a conscientious worker, always careful with his customers. He was always smartly turned out when he worked for us. His vehicle was always immaculate and he was very proud of the way he looked after customers.”

Mr Brown said: “He was very much a sociable fellow.” Mr Wilkinson, who lived at West Nooks, Haxby, also worked from York Railway Station as a hackney carriage driver for about two- and-a-half years.

Keith Hatfield, manager of Station Taxis, which is based at the station, said: “It’s a very sad occasion.”

Speaking yesterday at the opening of the inquest into Mr Wilkinson’s death, York coroner Donald Coverdale said: “I’m told that he (Mr Wilkinson) had a history of some psychiatric problems and had the benefit of psychiatric care.”

He said a post-mortem examination had been carried out and the provisional cause of Mr Wilkinson’s death was hanging.

He adjourned the inquest for a date to be fixed. The Press reported on Thursday how police believed there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding Mr Wilkinson’s death and were not looking for anyone else in connection with it.

Sad news.

But is this really the trade for folks with proven mental illnesses? :?

Very sad news indeed, I agree with what Sussex says about this trade being no good for people with a mental illness, this job can play games with your head at the best of times so how anyone can cope with driving a taxi while suffering from a mental disorder is beyond me.

4 years ago I was close to killing someone or myself which I nearly did, basically my head was a shed, things had gone off which tipped me over the edge. I summed up the swingers to go and see someone about it after taking advice from the lads who I worked with. Within 15 minutes he'd diagnosed what was wrong with me, treatment was,

1. Take these tablets under no circumstances can you drive.

2. Go on the sick.

3. I'm admitting you to hospital for assessment, yep you guessed it a nut house.

After spending 7 weeks in only what can be described as a 4 star hotel I was given the all clear to be discharged and sent home to continue my recovery.

People don't know they are suffering from a mental illness, they keep putting things to the back of their minds, "your head is not a hard drive it gets full up really quick", me I was like a walking time bomb it was only a matter of time before I killed someone or myself.

My advice to people who think they have a mental illness is, "GO AND SEE YOUR DOCTOR".

Anything like this is sad in fact it's awful

I'd like to say that it must have taken some courage to write about your own experiences Nigel, but, if it helps just one person it's more than worthwhile and it's good to know that you are happier now :D

The best thing about it Toots is you don't know you've got anything, you think it's normal until something snaps.

That is a sad day when someone feels that need, but at least it's all over for him now, find your peace and if there is another place to go i hope it's a happier one than here.

That's kinda scarey, especially for somebody like me :? As I said I'm just glad you're happier now :D
