Maybe they do charge VAT, but they can also reclaim a fair percentage of that VAT, and say they run 100 cars they can still make healthy profits by making smaller profits on them, they also gain by having more buying clout and can usually get discounts on repairs etc simply because of the scale of their operations.

Your argument would stand up except for the fact that we all know and accept that the big companies can discount more where as the little chaps cant..this isnt just in the TAXI/PHV market but in all markets, its a simple economic fact that big get bigger and the small tend to melt away into oblivion simply because the small have to make a profit from less.

ah, BUT - if the circuit is vat regd and the car owner doing the work is not, then all that happens si that ALL the vat will go to HMRC..

i.e.

£200 worth of work - plus vat = £30 of vat

charge £230 vat inc and the £30 is all going to HMRC anyway, as most ODs arent vat regd.

the county council isnt bothered, they are vat regd anyway...

well staffs, leics, warks and derby councils seem to be doing it the old fashioned way

spoke to one-shire tuesday who said they had 30-40 requests for runs from that day due to 6th formers alone, none had been known about before schools went back, they werent sending tenders out, just ringing round for prices due to time restraints

I can assure you Leics have been sending email tenders out. I have over 150 of them on my computer.

They are cutting each others throats round our way, contract jobs are being done for nothing, one newbie has quoted £17 for a job which was being done for £27, he's also got one which he bid £7 for, that was done last term for £13.

The one for £27 was being done at a cheap rate, even on the County Councils website the lowest quote before he put his price in was £28, the other run had a price of £14 before he put a bid in at £7.

This newbie has only got 2 cars and one of his drivers is leaving on Sunday to work for his dad so he's screwed before he starts, this year the County Council are saying that you can't sub-contract the school runs out, the firm who wins the contracts has to do them, no other firm can do the run. It's going to be interesting.
