UK cabbies protest killer joining their ranks

"I feel very strongly about this. We won't let it erode away our reputation," said Catherine Michael, 51, showing her green badge that allows cabbies to work as licensed drivers. "We want to stay the best in the world."

Jim Kelly of the Unite union said that allowing the man to become a cab driver could damage London's reputation for having the safest taxis in the world.

"Everyone is given an equal chance but the cabs' reputation will go down the toilet. We're not prepared to lose it, no way," said Grant Davis, chairman of the London Cab Drivers' Club union.

I think, thanks to Mr Worboys, the damage has already been done.

Also, Londoners use taxis? I thought they were a tourist attraction

As it was an LTDA protest, the chances of me reaching you would have been slim. As it happens I reached Pentonville Road at abot 2.30 and moved no further for around 20 mins. I think the message got through to the ivory tower.

Besides, I don't have a clue who you are.

Who's in charge at the Railway Union this week Mr CSP?
I see 'John the angry cabbie Kennedy' now seems to be the Bob Crow of the Taxi world.
Vice Chair? That was quick, its like the LCDC all over again.

Does he own a shirt that tucks in? :D

As it was an LTDA protest....

i thought it was a "joint trade" demo...............?

whilst that "them & us" attitude exists things will never move on GBC. It was good to see UNITE, LTDA and LCDC all represented there as well as the RMT. Like or loathe them, they have a growing membership in London and will eventually have to be formally recognised by not only TfL and the PCO but by the other trade orgs.................it's time for the head honchos to pull heads out of backsides and work together to put a stop to the crap that the powers that be seen content to foister upon us!

It was commendable that the demo was organised for yesterday but it wouldn't have hurt to have a presence at last weeks, isn't it about trade unity and the common goal ? Sadly some still feel they need to point score and make it personal when they should be working for the betterment of the trade. Was there any need for Richard and Co to move away from the others and set themselves up as lone wolves ? That doesn'e endear them to me as it sends out the message that "we are better than the rest"...................wrong! so, so wrong!! You should be equal to the rest and working for the same principle.

You know that Barry has refused to take my calls because of a silly falling out! How can i have faith in my trade org when one of the top men refuses to talk to me because of a disagreement we had ? We all throw our toys out the pram (as you well know) from time to time but sometimes you just got to say.....i'm better than that, i'm an adult and i can take a dig or 3.

Ask Steve when he found out about this guy. I'll be interested to know if he gives you an honest answer. I know as i heard it directly from the source..........not a trade rep with a hidden agenda, just someone who felt it was wrong for the likes of Mary Dowdye to cover it up (this goes back to May 08 in case you weren't aware) and decided to expose it to the media.

I don't like to take sides with trade orgs, they all have their good and bad points. I dislike the sanctimonious attitude that some adopt and find it only undermines what many in this trade are trying to do for the betterment of our industry.

The day we can move on from the bitterness and point scoring that most if not all of them have adopted, is the day we as a trade can stand tall and make our voices clearly heard.

With a trade of 26'000, from the far left to the far right, it ain't gonna happen as much as we would like to see it.

That's why drivers make their choice when it comes to the 4 representative bodies.

That's life, that's why I chose the LTDA, they're quietly confident, and very professional, and I have absolute confidence in the legal cover.
I don't like loud folks that promise the earth, wave flags, yet deliver nothing of substance, not even a toilet.

They're all competing for members, hence exposing each others weaknesses will always be on the agenda, no different to any other trade in Britain.

On the plus side, I see all the new ranks should be in place within the next 8 weeks.

Lets see how many of the 'Up and at them' crew even bother to work after midnight or serve the ranks they bleated on about so much. :?

far left - far right!!!

all nonsense. The trade as a collective should only be concerned with what is applicable to the trade.........we have a murderer doing the knowledge, we all agree it's wrong, we fight it as a united force. We dislike the clip board Johnny, we fight it collectively.

There is a lot more that we as a trade can agree on as opposed to disagree on. We can take issue with what we dislike and work out resolutions that works in the favour of you and me; the guys out there working and trying to earn a living.........not desk bound chaps who haven't driven a taxi in God knows how long.

It's the same situation that affects many people in that position. They start off with good intention then find that they are earning a comfortable living without having to be on the front line.......complancency creeps in and before they know it they no longer wish to kick up a fuss or upset too many bigwigs for fear of being kicked out and having to revert back to their former careers.

Whilst the LTDA may be confident they are also sadly quite arrogant. They refuse to acknowledge that others may also have valid points or good ideas that can be beneficial to the trade, instead opting to go it alone. It is in dire need of fresh blood. Also i would question their judgement and professionalism on many issues but don't want to be drawn into a battle of who's better or not. There are far more pressing issues that need to be addressed.

As for the toilet, i believe that motions are in place regards that issue! ;)

I hope you will be joining us on this evenings actions against the touts ? As usual, it's down to the driver on the street to organise and carry out the dirty work......... 8)

Was that a motion or a movement?

As for tonights action, you forget I'm not partial to the goings on over on the RMT forum, and I mean that this time, nor can I be arsed subscribing to this 'Twitter' craze.

I wasn't out tonight, last night worked out ok in the end, so I'm out tomorrow night instead, plus Sunday.

I'm taking it as confirmed as to your choice of Union?

Choo choo. :D

lol, to be honest i'm still signed up with LTDA but only because i've been busy with different stuff to get around to sorting something out.

I just want the legal cover, i'm pretty much black balled at the LTDA now (must be in the wrong masonic lodge or summat) so have a choice between 3................. :D
