1. Do we know what make of vehicle the coroner referred to?

2. Out of interest, what make of vehicle do you drive, Brummie?

The vehicle in the fatal incident was a Eurocab & I drive a six seater Metrocab.

Also, there must be a lot more that the coroner said, which has not been reported as yet.

I will try my mate BrYan with a Y on Monday; see if he know any more.

I've seen cars where the ramps are too narrow, in an ideal world the ramp should be a one piece like a tail ramp on a lorry and imo the floor should be modded to have metal bracket wheel clamps that would loop over the bottoms of the chair wheels to hold the chair, this would save so much time for the driver, simply pull out the ramp from the floor, chair in the locked position and ramp back into the floor and away yer go, or you could always use a saloon car where moving chairs don't come into it and the person is held secure by that old invention that seems to work, the inertia reel belt :wink:

Ban all WAV's they are bad for the drivers health & safety. Ban them because they are not safe for wheelchair users. Ban them because they are not enviromentally sound..use too much fuel & spew out too much carbon diaoxide. Apart from that they are ok!

This is an erratic link, but it is working this morning.

Please click on the link below; it should take you to the required page in a newly opened window.

http://www.birmingham.gov.uk/democracy/ ... ID%3d48850

If it takes you to a page with ‘Welcome to Democracy in Birmingham’ with two drop down menus for ‘Meeting Body Type’ & ‘Meeting Body’, leave the new window open & click on the previously opened window & then click on the above link AGAIN & another new window will open with what should now be the correct page. Then follow the instructions at the top of this post.

If this still does not work proceed as follows;

Click on the link below;

http://www.birmingham.gov.uk/democracy/Pages/Index.aspx

In the first drop down menu (Meeting Body Type) select ‘Regulatory’. In the second drop down menu (Meeting Body) select ‘Licensing Committee’ (without a letter suffix). Type in the date 01/09/2009 & 30/09/2009 in the ‘From’ & ‘To’ boxes respectively & press Go.

Click on Licensing Committee.

Click on ‘More’ at the bottom right of the page to go to page 2 of 3. Click on ‘Disability Awareness Training for Hackney Carriage Drivers’ & the report including the Coroner’s letter should appear.

Interesting reading & sorry for the convoluted web site; but this is Birmingham’s.

Got it now thanks Brummie.

This will have nationwide repercussions.

I know my own LA have been asking about it....they were kind of disappointed the Hartlepool thing got more or less covered up, but that was a minibus with electric ramp, not a taxi with a negligent driver.

What I can't understand is Birmingham City Council's Licensing Department's reluctance to immediately include into the Hackney Carriage Bye-laws a clause that all Hackney Carriage drivers shall only carry wheelchair passengers in the correct & prescribed manner; facing backwards, wheelchair brakes applied, the vehicle's wheelchair chassis restraints fitted, the wheelchair's own seatbelts fitted to the passenger & the vehicle's wheelchair seatbelts fitted around the passenger & wheelchair.

I strongly suggested this at the last Hackney Carriage Trade Liaison Meeting at which this matter was discussed in detail.

There reluctance to take this approach worries me, because taking the course is one thing, abiding by what you should have been taught on that course is another.

And as we all know how many will bother to do as they should, unless you add such a clause into the Bye-laws!!

Bearing in mind other matters on the agenda this week, I wonder if you had minutes taken of what you said at that particular meeting?

We always have minutes taken & circulated.

If this contribution / request of mine is not included in the minutes, then I will ask for them to be amended to show that I urged for the Bye-laws to be amended / added to, so as to make it compulsory for HC drivers to only carry wheelchair passengers in the prescribed manner.

Good point Captain; thanks for the prompt.

PS What are the other matters on the agenda this week; have I missed something?
