A report in today's Daily Telegraph.

"Fewer heart attacks after smoking ban"

The smoking ban has led to an estimated 10% fall in the number of heart attacks, according to researchers. (England)

A 14% fall in Scotland, where the ban has been in place longer.

Maybe the 14% that would normally have died from those heart attacks simply died from some other causes..or more likely they topped themselves due to the severe melancholy that this present nanny government induces in all of us..

Why cant the government give us our freedoms back..let people smoke in cabs if they want to and if they dont want to then they can use a no smoking vehicle. Its a perfectly fair Idea as the non smokers will give their business to the non Smoking cabby and vice-versa, same applies to Pubs.

How much better this country would if we were free from such tyrannys and nannying, a happy nation is going to get itself out of a recession much more quickly than a depressed nation is, indeed happy people tend to live longer anyways...so why try and crush the life out of us and our freedoms.

You sound like That Aussie actor who painted himself blue in that film about scotland, willy wally, or something...

wouldnt know..im to busy to watch that kinda nonsense.

Was it willy wonka you were thinking of..I got the Linda lovelace version here..Its kinda blue

I think the smoking ban should be reviewed to help improve the income of the pubs. Perhaps a mixture of pubs some that have smoking and some that don't. Perhaps those that serve food should maybe not allow smoking. Who knows what the best solution is, but, I can't help but think that the smoking ban has certainly had an adverse effect on things, more so than they originally thought. It is of course not the only thing to affect the economy or our income

You may think that Toots, but it will never, ever, happen.

The smoking ban is here for good, like it or not, and will eventually be extended to all public spaces.

Personally I'm not bothered whether we can or cannot smoke in public places but I fail to see what other public places there are left to ban smoking in other than the street

Telegraph, 4/2/2011.

"New York bans smoking in parks"

New York has banned smoking in parks, public squares and on beaches - and polititions say it may soon be outlawed altogether.
The City Council has made 1,700 areas smoke free, including Central Park and Times square, eight years after a ban in bars. Those caught lighting up will be fined $50.
The ban, supported by mayor Micheal Bloomberg, provoked some opposition in the council. Erik Dilan, a democrat, said health benifits would be small, while Dan Halloran, a Republican, warned that anti-smokers would soon "target the home"

Predicted by me in 2009.

Where New York leads, the world will follow.
