I was recently working the Bestival on the Isle of Wight and after checking my cab found a new iPhone left by a punter. I tried to switch it on, so as to be able to possibly trace the owner through his/her contact list. Unfortunately the battery was dead. Not having an iPhone charger my only option now was to hand it in to the lost property office at my local police station on the Isle of Wight.

I toddled off to the police station and dutifully handed over the iPhone to an assistant. I requested a receipt just in case nobody picked up the phone and then I could claim ownership, only to be informed that if no one claimed this phone it would be broken up...i.e. destroyed. Apparently this is Hampshire Police policy now to conform with the Data Protection Act.

Surely a policy that discourages honesty?

Laptops are the same. Also if you find a passport wait a few days before you hand it in,because they are automatically destroyed even if the person comes to claim it.

Is it beyond their realms of ingenuity to have an expert erase any data and then return the unit to the finder...what a waste

I'm not sure that's the way the law is.

Write to the Chief Constable for clarification.
