The guy who made a similar call to the police claiming he was the Yorkshire Ripper was sentenced to 4 years imprisonment, if my memory still serves well, & that was about 25 years after the incident.

Let's hope this a*sehole gets at least that & here's hoping for a lot more.

E-fit In Taxi Driver Murder Case

17th September 2009

Police have released an e-fit of a man they want to speak to in connection with the murder of a taxi driver who was stabbed in the head several times.

Mohammed Arshad, 36, was found after being attacked in Kings Norton, Birmingham, on 22 July.

Detectives compiled the image following a call from a member of the public.

The caller reported seeing a man making a telephone call from a kiosk in another part of Kings Norton the night of the attack.

Police said they knew that at about 2020 BST a man, calling himself Peter, rang Mr Arshad's taxi firm A Cars from the kiosk outside the Spar store in Lindsworth Approach.

He asked to be picked up from outside nearby Broadmeadow School in Monyhull Hall Road, and Mr Arshad was sent to collect him.

'Staring intently'

The man described by the latest witness was seen in the phone box shortly after 2000 BST.

Police said the member of the public told them how that man had stared at them intently as he walked towards the shop.

The man was described as being slim, about 5ft 8in to 5ft 10in tall, with dark brown or black hair which was short and brushed forward.

He wore a dark, long-sleeved top and jeans.

Det Supt Sheila Thornes said she hoped someone would recognise the man in the e-fit and urged anyone with information to contact police.

Earlier this week, West Mercia Police said it had drafted in extra detectives to help follow up leads which emerged after a BBC Crimewatch appeal.

A £10,000 reward has been offered to find the taxi driver's killers.

More Police Drafted In To Taxi Driver Murder Inquiry

Wednesday 16th September 2009

Extra officers have been drafted in by West Mercia Police to deal with the public response to appeals for information following the murder of taxi driver Mohammed Arshad at Hopwood.

A reconstruction of events leading up to the murder was screened on BBC’s Crimewatch programme on September 2 and immediately generated 40 calls from members of the public, providing fresh lines of inquiry. More information has continued to filter into the Major Incident Room at Redditch, resulting in 10 additional detectives being drafted in to work on the investigation, which is now in its seventh week. That brings the number of detectives working on the case to around 60.

Dc Supt Sheila Thornes, who is leading the hunt, said: “There has been a good public response to our appeals and we would like to thank each and every person who has taken the trouble to pick up the phone. Information is also being passed on to officers visiting homes on the Hawkesley estate where we have had good co-operation from residents.

“In any inquiry like this there are literally thousands of items which need to be analysed, checked and processed – and that obviously takes time. A vast amount of information is coming into the investigation team and now we have brought in extra resources to ensure that all of that is actioned as quickly as possible.

“This is still a very active and dynamic investigation and there will be no let up until we have brought the killer to justice.”

Inquiries are still focused on identifying a man calling himself Peter who was picked up by Mr Arshad outside Broadmeadow School in Monyhull Hall Road, Kings Norton, on Wednesday, July 22, after phoning A Cars for a taxi at about 8.20pm.

Mr Arshad was found stabbed in the head in Wast Hills Lane shortly afterwards and his blue Ford Galaxy people carrier was later discovered abandoned in Shannon Road.

A blue people carrier taxi was involved in a near head-on collision with a woman driving in Longbridge Lane, Birmingham, at 8.36pm on the evening of the attack and police have appealed for the driver to come forward in order to establish whether it was Mr Arshad’s vehicle.

A £10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of Mr Arshad’s killer is still on offer and anyone with information should call police at Redditch on 0300 333 3000 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555111.

Bus campaign launched to catch taxi driver murderer

WEST Mercia Police will today launch a new bus advertising campaign as part of the investigation into the murder of taxi driver Mohammed Arshad at Hopwood.

Mr Arshad was found stabbed in the head in Wast Hills Lane on July 22 and died the following day.

Detectives released CCTV images of a man they want to speak to in connection with the case back in August and have now taken the unusual step of using one of these images in a poster campaign with National Express West Midland buses in a bid to circulate the man’s image more widely.

The man’s image was captured on CCTV cameras in Monyhull Hall Road in Kings Norton on the evening that Mohammed Arshad was attacked and he is believed to be the taxi driver’s last known fare.

Dc Supt Sheila Thornes said: “This is the first time West Mercia Police have used bus advertising as part of a murder investigation. It’s vital we identify the man in the CCTV image and we’re hopeful someone will recognise him and call the murder incident room at Redditch on 0300 333 3000.

“There is a reward of £10,000 on offer for information leading to the arrest and conviction of Mr Arshad’s killer and we hope this will prompt someone to call in.”

The poster campaign will be featured on the back of 50 National Express West Midlands buses operating out of the depots in Acocks Green and Yardley Wood in Birmingham, and will run for the next four weeks.

The police would like to thank CBS Outdoor and National Express West Midlands for their assistance with this project.

Dc Supt Thornes ended: “We’ve had an excellent response to the appeals we’ve made so far and we’d like to thank the many witnesses who have already contacted us with information. However, we still need the public to tell us who the man featured in the CCTV is and where he’s from, to help us move forward with our inquiry.”

I saw that on the news as well. Let's hope it is the killer.

Man Held Over Taxi Driver Murder

Nov 16 2009

A Birmingham man has been arrested on suspicion of the murder of taxi driver Mohammed Arshad.

The 36-year-old father-of-three was found slumped in a country lane in Worcestershire on July 22.

He was repeatedly stabbed in the head before being left for dead in Wast Hills Lane, on the county border with Birmingham.

His Blue Ford Galaxy taxi was found abandoned about a mile away in Shannon Road on the Hawkesley estate in Kings Norton.

Last night detectives from West Mercia police were questioning the 28-year-old suspect at a police station in North Worcestershire.

A spokesman for West Mercia Police said: “A 28-year-old man from the Kings Norton area was arrested on Saturday, November 14, on suspicion of the murder of taxi driver Mohammed Arshad.

“He is being questioned by detectives at a police station in North Worcestershire.”

The arrest comes after new images of a man wanted in connection with the murder were shown on BBC1’s Crimewatch programme last Thursday.

They showed a man who caught the No.35 bus at The Fold in Kings Norton around 20 minutes after the attack.

He got off at the junction with Monyhull Hall Road and Brandwood Park Road, Kings Norton, close to the area where Mr Arshad collected his last fare, shortly after 9pm.

West Mercia Police had previously issued CCTV images of a man they believed to be Arshad’s last fare but he was not immediately identified.

Last night an address in Ratcliffe Road, Druids Heath was being searched by forensic experts.

A witness said it appeared officers were removing items for further investigation.

A £10,000 reward has been offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of Mr Arshad’s killer.

The Fold is one of the most notorious areas of Birmingham with massive levels of crime, prostitution & drugs.

And the No 35 bus goes to Druids Heath, where the house search is taking place.

Lets hope it's game, set & match for the police on this one.

Taxi Driver Murder Accused In Court

20 November 2009

A man charged with the murder of taxi driver Mohammed Arshad has had his case sent to Crown Court.

Andrew Bayliss, of Ratcliffe Avenue, Kings Norton, appeared at Redditch Magistrates on Tuesday (November 17) where he was remanded in custody after his application for bail was turned down.

The 27-year-old was told he will face Worcester Crown Court for a preliminary hearing on Monday (November 23).

He is charged with the murder of father-of-three Mr Arshad, 36, who was found with stab wounds to the head in Wast Hills Lane, Kings Norton on July 22.

Mr Arshad died of his injuries in hospital the following day.

The taxi driver's blue Ford Galaxy people carrier was found abandoned about a mile away in Shannon Road on the Hawkesley estate.

Bayliss, dressed in a white T-shirt and black trousers, spoke in court only to confirm his name, date of birth and address.

He was flanked by two officers as he entered court and there were also several officers present in the court.

As David Elliot, district crown prosecutor for North Worcestershire, outlined the case against him, Bayliss spent long periods with his eyes closed.

Adrian Bryant, defending, explained that Bayliss was a former warehouse worker and father to a five-year-old son.

The public gallery was full with some members of the public having to stand, and included Redditch taxi drivers who had come to court out of respect for Mr Arshad.
