Widnes Cabbie Could Lose Licence After Refusing To Take A Disabled Passenger
Sep 30 2009
A cabbie faces losing his licence after allegedly refusing to take a disabled person with learning difficulties in his taxi.
It is claimed Brian Moore refused to take the passenger, who uses a wheelchair, even though the vehicle said it had disabled access.
But when Lynsey Briggs, the care worker accompanying the wheelchair user, asked why he was refusing the fare, it is alleged Mr Briggs told her “don’t argue with me” before helping an able-bodied passenger load her shopping into the cab and driving off.
The incident, outside Asda in Widnes, will be probed by Halton council bosses tomorrow.
The meeting will decide whether or not Mr Moore, of Widnes, should be allowed to keep his licence.
A report prepared ahead of tomorrow’s meeting said: “These allegations, if proven, will be in breach of the Disability Discrimination Act.”
A statement by Ms Biggs, project manager of Barrows Green Creative Support, said she was with the wheelchair user on April 9.
She said: “We asked if he had ramps to use so the lady in the wheelchair could access the taxi.
“He said he had no ramps and would not take her. I asked if he was a disabled access taxi, why had he no ramps?”
